Dear Black People

I would love to make a movie or documentary about working in the service industry and my experiences with the majority of black tables I've waited on. I work with a multi cultural wait staff and everyone including African American servers will tell you they hate waiting on black people. They are demanding sometimes rude and more often than not will tip you horrendously. For example I had a table of African American women and I gave them the same great service I give everyone, I give people the benefit of the doubt, they ran me to death and 7 women half of which were kids racked up a 192$ bill and tipped me 12$.

reply

Fascinating...yet, no one cares. At all.

reply

[deleted]

I know right. If you're going to make a movie titled "Dear Black People" at least be the complete opposite in talking about wail tables at restaurants.

It would have be black people serving white people noob.

Kind of like if I was white and I decided to make a movie titled "Black Chicks", you know the opposite of "White Chicks". It would star Ben Afleck and Matt Damon as undercover CIA agents who infiltrate South Central LA disguised as two Black chicks.

and the whole world has to answer right now just to tell you once again. Who's Bad?

reply

You mad? Black people are cheap and rude when eating out. The way they order is, "yo let me get", "give me this", and they tip poorly and are very demanding. I use to wait tables long ago and I can say black people are the worst to deal with, and this is coming from a non-white person.

State champ in martial arts, trained with firearms, I eFF'n dare you!

reply

black people are cheap when eating out? ok so if one white guy is racist i camn lable ALL of them racist yeah? or if one cop is a racist murderer then they all are right? i see why america is in the place its in right now. im black i also live in england ive never ordered food like that anywhere so what now? ok dark knight all white people are obviously racist in stereotyping black people all the same if u wanna take that route.

reply

Except its one of the most popular threads on the board, guess you were wrong.

reply

You cared enough to reply. Your point is invalid.

reply

Her point is valid.

She cared enough to tell a race baiting troll his racist rant was invalid. What she doesn't care about is your racist rant about your tip. Boo hoo you didn't get a tip....yet young unarmed kids like Tamir Rice keep getting murdered by cops and keep getting a pass.

reply

[deleted]

What was racist about the OP's comments? I didn't see anything racist about it. He was reporting his observations based on empirical evidence (aka "personal experience"). You can't discredit that.

young unarmed kids like Tamir Rice keep getting murdered by cops and keep getting a pass.

How many cops have been killed by black criminals? Why is that not important?

reply

Using the word 'black', in ANY context these days, is automatically racist, no matter the intent. What a great world we live in.

reply

[deleted]

What the hell does that have to do with working a job ob tips? You're stupid. Typical response from a racist black person. I guess you're one of those black people that are rude and don't tip either.

State champ in martial arts, trained with firearms, I eFF'n dare you!

OP...your issue was already covered in "dear white people."

oh well. back to the drawing board.

black people tip badly, i guess we are lucky to even be in the same establishment as white people, after all 60 years ago couldnt even use a water fountain, heres a thing give the black people a fair share of the country they built you for free and maybe they'll tip more.......just a thought.

reply

First of all I never owned slaves and my Dad's lineage were Native Americans so they didn't either. Also slavery has been abolished for about 150 years. The civil rights movement was 60 years ago. I had nothing to do with it. Also immigrants built this country not black people. They worked in the fields in the south 150 years ago.

reply

First of all I never owned slaves

no one accused you of such.

and my Dad's lineage were Native Americans so they didn't either.

some native americans actually did own slaves.

Also slavery has been abolished for about 150 years.

the effects of slavery still exist.

The civil rights movement was 60 years ago.

the effects of jim crow still exist, and those people are STILL living.

I had nothing to do with it.

others around you who are connected to you had something to do with it. your boss's boss and his colleagues are probably white and probably own the restaurant you work in due to privileges white people got in the 1950s that black people didn't get.

Also immigrants built this country not black people.

uh, black people were forced immigrants. black people are not native to this land. enslaved people and their descendants did build america (see how you are still harping on slavery? potent).

They worked in the fields in the south 150 years ago.

there would be no american industrial revolution without the agricultural capital amassed from the slave industry.

"Please disabuse yourself of the notion that my purpose on earth is to tuck ignorance in at night."

were it not for the profits made in "the rural south" there would be no revenue for the rest of the country to prosper.

our largest and wealthiest banks and companies today have letters in their files all apologizing for how they benefitted from slavery. these are not just "southern" entities.

"Please disabuse yourself of the notion that my purpose on earth is to tuck ignorance in at night."

reply

[deleted]

New York had the second largest population of slaves at one time. They were only behind South Carolina. Why? Slaves built the roads and the infrastructure. Don't try to say the north didn't profit from slavery.

reply

That's a total lie. At the time of the civil war, according to the 1860 census, 0% of families owned slaves in NY (it was illegal) 46% of families owned slaves in South Carolina.

reply

AT ONE TIME. Your point is invalid when I said nothing about what year NY had the most slaves. New York had an incredibly high percentage of slaves in the early 1700s, starting when a bunch of Dutch immigrants brought 11 of them there in the early 1600s. They freed their slaves long before most southern states did, that is true, but it was in no way exempt from the slave trade in its history.

reply

Also Africans owned and still engage in slavery and trafficking with their own people. Jim Crow laws do not exist anymore. Have you ever heard of affirmative action? The world will heal when people like you die.

reply

Also Africans owned and still engage in slavery and trafficking with their own people.

since we don't live in that continent currently, this statement is irrelevant to this conversation about america. what happens in african countries probably has no influence on the tips you do or do not recieve. what happens in african countries also has no bearing on a film called "dear white people," which has an entire scene in it about black people tipping in restaurants.

Jim Crow laws do not exist anymore.

the effects of jim crow do exist, is what was stated.

Have you ever heard of affirmative action?

white women benefit most from affirmative action. so yeah, i've heard of it.

The world will heal when people like you die.

that's a lovely thing to say in a simple conversation with a stranger on a chatboard about movies.

your attitude that you displayed with that statement may be part of the reason why people don't tip you well. if you come off as hostile, then that affects the service you give, which affects the tips you receive. just a thought.

You're a race batter.

the only reason you're on this particular board is to race-bait. you haven't discussed the actual film even once. every single post you've made on this board has been about how bad black people are to you. THAT is "race-baiting."

There's no point in having a logical debate with you because you are illogical.

you're just upset because you can't refute anything i've said.

you should actually watch the film before posting anything else on this board.

"Please disabuse yourself of the notion that my purpose on earth is to tuck ignorance in at night."

my first post in your thread was about the movie.

"Please disabuse yourself of the notion that my purpose on earth is to tuck ignorance in at night."

reply

How is the movie race baiting? If you had 'actually' watched the film, instead of just spouting a load of rubbish about it, you would realise that the main character "Sam White," became conflicted on her views about white people when her father became incredibly ill.

Throughout the film it displays her disdain for a group of white people who are responsible for racist and stereotypical attitudes towards black people, and she aims to create a voice for others - and who can blame her! It demonstrates her passion for her cause and there are many instances in the film where she feels awkward about her own views (namely the one I've previously mentioned, but also because she attempts to form a relationship with one of her fellow students - who is WHITE). And finally, at the end of the film she comes to realise that, whilst there are racist, ignorant white people out there, there are also those who just wish that everybody could get along with one another; and (even though this is a film) it makes me have a lot of respect for the character being portrayed.

Going back to what you said earlier, I went to a restaurant with my wife the other day, where the staff were very well-mannered, the food was delicious and oh... we gave them a tip of 25p for a £54 meal. This was due to an overall lousy service at the restaurant and the fact that our waitress asked us for a tip. I'm sorry, but the point of a tip is to reward a member of staff for doing an 'exceptional' job (not a standard or sub-standard job). It is not there (or should not be there) to compensate workers for *beep* wages (which is the responsibility for your employer).

If you don't like the fact that people don't tip you as much, think about what their situation might be: perhaps you gave them an exceptional service, but they only had enough to pay for the meal itself - a customary tip being at least 12.5% (if I remember correctly); in which case, it sucks, but life goes on. Also, I reckon there were plenty of other groups of people who didn't tip you, but you probably don't focus on that too much.

Oh, and to top this all off: I'm white, so it really doesn't matter who you preach to; people will still think you're racist.

reply

The current concept of "race" in America is rooted in two major parts of our very unique and twisted history: Being the first nation economically built on a form of slavery specifically predicated on "race"; and the ensuing 100 years of apartheid after it's formal abolishment (commonly referred to as "Jim Crow"). It has, quite simply, produced an ever evolving and ongoing obsession with race like you wouldn't believe!

In it's current state it can somewhat be broken down into two major viewpoints: For most so-called "nonwhites" it is literally a matter of life and death that racism be understood as an underlying systemic and institutional process. Predicated on the endless perpetuation of "white" supremacy. Rooted, likewise, in an endless cycle of overt and (especially) covert violence. With tentacles throughout virtually all American life...past AND present. While typically, for most so-called "whites", it is almost as equally imperative to them that racism be defined very, very strictly as SCATTERED, RANDOM and (especially) INDIVIDUAL acts of overt and blatant racial hostility. So by extension, since the vast majority of "whites" do not overtly display such behavior, it means to them that racism is a thing of the past.

The result then is an absolute mess! Because, quite frankly, after more than 350 years of arguing vehemently about this stuff, the two sides STILL can't seem to come to anything even close to an agreement on what racism even is in the first place! Much less combat it uniformly or fairly.

So in answer to your final question: You would be utterly amazed at the number of Americans who really think this way about race! ...And a million other inconceivably twisted ways as well! Debating this stuff from a million different angles is pretty much our single biggest national pastime.

No man lies so boldly as the man who is indignant.

Stop playing the pity card. My family survived a genocide that killed 1.7 million people (over 25% of the population) in 3 years, we don't dwell on the past and we keep moving forward.

If you live in America, then black people have it better than anyone else. They have the best stereotypes. They are pre-judged positively by their whole country. They can be hateful and racist towards ANY race they want and not get punished for it. A non-black person can just say, "I heard black people love fried chicken" and get fired and fined a hefty amount. Black people have their very own channel! BET... ALL black movies and TV shows on that channel. Do White people, Native Americans, Mexicans, Jewish people have their own channel like black people? NO, they don't! When black men steal, rape, and torture it is justified by society. They can hit anyone they want and it will be justified. Just like when that black guy got scared when that white guy jumped in front of him, the black guy hit the white guy and the black guy told him, "you can't be scarin' black people, man! WE don't like that!" We all know what he's saying ... "WE don't like that" as in ONLY black people can hit someone for doing bad to them. Anyone who is not socially retarded will understand that. And if a black person gets arrested, the world will say, "the black person is innocent! the cops only arrested them cuz he/she's black!" And there will be protests galore!

That being said ... black people actually have MORE of a fair share of the country they live in (assuming you're in America)

So there you go, they should have tipped the OP more.

First, off no one needs to be pre-judged. That's prejudice (notice how similar the words are?). After mentioning that, you proceed to judge the entire race negatively.

"I heard black people love fried chicken" and get fired and fined a hefty amount.

If you say anything racist at the workplace, you should be fired, regardless of race.

Black people have their very own channel! BET... ALL black movies and TV shows on that channel. Do White people, Native Americans, Mexicans, Jewish people have their own channel like black people?

White people have every channel. Hell, even BET is owned by MTV. And you are seriously asinine if you don't think people of other ethnicities have channels with which they can identify.

When black men steal, rape, and torture it is justified by society. They can hit anyone they want and it will be justified.

If that were the case, black men would never go to jail, be on trial, be shot and/or brutalized by police, etc. There's no justification for any of those actions, especially not for black people.

I don't think anyone knows what you're referring to, if this really even happened. Please, do provide a link to what you're referring.

Anyone who is not socially retarded will understand that.

There's no need to use that language.

And if a black person gets arrested, the world will say, "the black person is innocent! the cops only arrested them cuz he/she's black!" And there will be protests galore!

There are protests when a black person is killed without a trial. As Americans, we all deserve to be given fair trial before sentencing, not murdered in the street.

You can't be this stupid.

Why watch a movie that is clearly made to insult white people? The only people who would even watch a movie with such a title are black people who want to feel like the superior race or white people who hate themselves.

Would you watch a movie with a title, "Dear Black People?" And no FOX News doesn't count, majorly because Fox News isn't TITLED "Dear Black People." And if it (FOX News) is designed to make black people look bad is debatable.

I agree totally. However that is the way we are paid and restaurants that have salaried servers are more expensive. So until they do change it people need to tip or stay home.

So, people shouldn't be allowed to eat out in restaurants unless they can tip "appropriately?" Is that what you've come up with? Well, I think that you should perhaps change your profession, learn to deal with the tips you earn or work somewhere where the tips are better. Maybe you'd be better tipped in an "exclusive" country club. I mean, you don't absolutely HAVE to be a waiter, do you? Find a job that pays you a more livable wage.

reply

First, I should let you know that I only joined IMDB in order to comment on this thread. Second, I too have not seen the movie, although as soon as I find a place where I can get it, I hope to. I came across it looking at movies filmed in Minneapolis. Third, I have had over ten years experience working in a restaurant.

I have to admit that I agree to a certain extent with the OP. Now, it is obvious that not all black people are bad tippers. As stated, that is prejudiced. However, from experience the American Black community tends to tip poorly. I say American since some of the nicest and best tipping customers are people who came willingly to the US from Africa. Those who have not come willingly from Africa (e.g. Somalians who fled thier homes) I can understand their inability to tip well, and they tend to be quite nice, as well as apologetic for their lack of a decent tip.

I am white. My ancestors moved here in the early 20th century. They lived lives that were quite rough, including being beaten for having any alcohol (My Ojibwe/Canadian ancestors), forced to live in squalid conditions (My Lithuanian ancestors forced to sleep in the back room of a butchers' shop), and attacked on the streets (German ancestors, especially during WWII). None of my ancestors owned slaves in this country, and it is doubtful they did elsewhere.

The rhetorical question that

people shouldn't be allowed to eat out in restaurants unless they can tip "appropriately?"
is ridiculous. They do. Standard is 15%. I had to claim at least 8% of my total sales as tips, else risk the wrath of the IRS. Claiming 10% or less raises just as much of a red flag. Tipping originates from the Great Depression as a way for restaurant owners to keep their staff while only giving them a pittance as their wage. It is necessary to tip decently. It is assumed you will. Without it, there is no reason to work in that profession, unless the owners create a profit-sharing of some sort, but it is doubtful that will happen. The idea that
you'd be better tipped in an "exclusive" country club
may be so, but how many jobs are there in places like that? Also, most require a large amount of experience serving before even attempting to apply, so where would that experience come from? Not to mention that if people took your advice, the number of sit-down restaurants would nearly, if not completely, disappear due to lack of staff.

For my final point, I have been harassed, insulted, taunted, demeaned, and assaulted by people of all races, but from experience, the American Black community tends to be quite racist, ranging from using the n-word (no matter if it was taken back, it is still a word of hate and should be dismissed from use by all people), creating derogatory terms such as "cracker", and often commenting on the look or actions of another person and attributing it to their race. The title of this film is a great example of that. I can only hope that it shines light on these problems.

Does racism exist? Yes. It is only natural, sadly, that the human brain is wired to be with and support people who look and/or act like yourself and be aprehensive towards those that are different. The key is to not act on it. It is heart-breaking that so many people have recently. The only way I can forsee racism toward fellow human beings becoming a thing of the past is for people to accept that others are people too. Treat people like you want to be treated. Would you like it if someone came it to your workplace and essentially stole from you? Of course not.

Now, before the "slavery, therefore I'm privileged" argument can be formed, I will address that. Not with the simple copout that after the Civil War the colony of Liberia was formed specifically for former slaves (it is generally considered to be a botched affair), but with the point that the American Black community today has many of the same benefits from slavery as the White population does, From infrastructure that (possibly by their ancestors) was built in the East, to the Chinese population in California. Built on their backs. I do understand this, but my parents come from poor origins, and with the use of their intellect were able to rise a bit from it. I put myself through college, paying for it with tips from the restaurant I worked at and scholarships earned from studying hard in high school. I graduated from college in 2008, just in time for the economic collapse that we are currently living in. I am poor. I am down-trodden. Yet I treat people as equally and fairly as possible. I don't always see reciprocation.

At least you got tipped money.
