Is this supposed to be happening in NYC? Cause its quite obvious not. Ontario car tags, no correct street names and no exteriors of the city. I mean at least shoot exteriors. It looks so Canadian. Any way good show so far.I'm on S1E4.

They never make any mention of which city they're in.

Technically no, but it's definitely Toronto, and not just because they film there and it's easy to spot the landmarks. They mention some of the suburbs in the GTA by name -- for instance, Allison lives in Scarborough, and this past year they made mention of Pickering -- so all the signs point to one main locale.

I believe a lot of the NYC confusion comes from the train Sarah departs in episode 101. That train runs from NYC to Toronto.

A lot of shows filmed in Canada take a 'generic North America' as their location, blurring the line between Canada and the U.S.

You will notice a lot of references to American cities. When Sarah gets off at the train station in 1.1 the announcer says 'Next train to New York City' which blurs the issue of where you are b/c you might think you are in America, or rather the USA b/c Canadians like to remind us that they are Americans too.
Sara tells the counselor in 1.2 that Paul is in Cleveland. Cosima is from the San Francisco area and is now going to the University of Minnesota.

Just listen as you go along and there are other references to American cities and locations that pop up from time to time.

It's not supposed to be New York but it's left ambiguous, I feel like it's kind of set in an alternate universe where the US and Canada are all one big country.

The show runners have basically said it takes place in "anywhere" town so as to not alienate the US viewers or the Canadian viewers. I didn't realize the location of a tv show was something that made people not want to watch- or feel alienated, but I'm also not on tv!
