I Really Wanted to Like This Movie, but...

I really like Vince Vaughn and I can stomach Owen Wilson when he’s teamed up with a good comic. But this movie had way too many flaws. I thought the base premise had potential; two salesman that have to get with the times and learn something completely foreign to them. It’s the old fish out of water. But instead of having the characters fight their way through this struggle, they have them thrive in their new environment by BSing their way through everything.

I won’t complain about the VERY OBVIOUS ending because if you didn’t know how it would end you shouldn’t have even watched it to begin with.

1st: They should have never been accepted. From their joke of an interview to their fraudulent college status. I get that this was done for comedic purposes, but there is no basis in reality for this. And why did they get in? Because in the hiring group, the nerd in the group made a simplistic argument for them that should have had him laughed out of the room. And by the way, why in the hell was someone from the hiring unit put onto an intern team? Can you say conflict of interest?

2nd: A weak ass foil. Even though it’s a comedy, the purpose of a foil is to provide the heroin in obstacle to overcome. Here, the “villain” is just a rude jerk. You don’t hate him because you don’t care about him. It’s almost a pointless character because he added no comedy to the story.

3rd: The women. I get that it’s a comedy and the lead has to get the girl, but does it have to be someone THAT FAR out of his league? He’s a failed salesman and she’s part of Google management and very cute and they have nothing in common. But of course she’s supposed to be taken by his “charm” of being a loser. Also, how unbelievably stupid was it that a stripper could completely fall for a computer geek. Yes, I get she's actually a dance instructor working as a stripper. Because of course strippers are honest women who really have hearts of gold and just looking for an honest guy who’ll appreciate them for who they are. They aren't manipulative shrews looking to squeeze every nickel out of your pocket and could totally fall for a spineless geek who never talks to women.

4th: The outcome: I’m not complaining that they won (even though it’s stupid) but in the finale, they win over the judges (and for some reason their competitors) with a Jib Jab animation and the song from Flashdance. When they are announced as the winners, everyone is cheering for them and high fiving. Aren’t they trying to win too? Why are they so happy to lose?

Finally, I know they’re suppose to be salesman so they have a way with people, but their constant BS pep talks that are so laughable, most people would just walk away from and their cheap salesman talk throughout the movie would impress absolutely no one. These guys are just shy of being con artists. So why are we supposed to like them? I was more annoyed with them.

Like I said, I really wanted to like this movie. And in truth it’s good for a couple of chuckles, but that it. The opportunity was there for a good comedy, but they went with a generic formulaic script and went for cheap laughs.

Oddly enough the only character I liked was Mr. Chetty (Aasif Mandvi)

I disagree with everything you said.

You need to lighten up in my opinion. Or light up.
