I once had a psychology professor in college that worked with retarded children her entire life tell us (class of about 200 if that is relevant) that the one thing the children would agree on is what you just wrote. They all wished people would be honest. Call them retarded but treat them as you do anyone else. They disliked the political correctness and special treatment. Everyone has something.

I don't think it was laughing AT. That character actually had legit role in the movie and wasn't used as a prop to set up cruel jokes.

It's true, folks that have a physical or mental challenge just want to be treated normal. Trust me, they already are aware of their challenges, so when you just treat everyone normal, it means the world.
