Why the title is "Cavalry" ?

Hello,

I'm not a native English speaker, nor acquainted with Irish culture, so maybe I'm missing something obvious.

Anyone would be so kind to explain why "Cavalry" is named like this ?

...

After a Google search, I found out here:
http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/movies/2014/08/brendan_gleeson_in_john_michael_mcdonagh_s_calvary_reviewed.html

The title of Calvary refers to the name of the hill on which Jesus was crucified, and in many ways this is a story of sacrifice and redemption.

I'm still posting my message in case someone else also wonders about it... :-)

The extent of which is exaggerated.

You make it sound as if it's an institutional hallmark of the Church, which it's clearly not.

Most times I consider this phony outrage, considering a child is 100 times more likely to be a victim of sexual assault from a teacher in the US public educational system. But rarely do you hear, if ever, similar cries of terror.

Please enlighten us with your sources. Your math interests me. Specifically "100x more likely"...

And you might have missed, but the UN is involved in many child abuse scandals...except that you don't watch that on TV or read it in the newspaper.

It is easier to point fingers to one group, so the others can keep on doing it.

Ironic that your post ends with '...so they can keep on doing it'. What apologists routinely fail to understand is that much of the outrage directed at the Catholic church relates to the way it has systematically tolerated and even facilitated paedophile priests. By encouraging complainants (or their parents) not to go to the police, and by dishonestly claiming abusive priests have been removed from a position where further abuse might be possible, the church is thoroughly complicit. Any school who merely passes a rapist teacher on to another school, allowing him to continue his abuse, would be as complicit. I'm sure this has happened but it clearly isn't the school system's default response, unlike that of the church.

As for how many teachers vs priests abuse... what a meaningless comparison to make. There are rather more teachers than Catholic priests. Priests have a greater psychological hold over the victim, how can we ever expect to know how many have been abused? Many of those who come forward to their family never go public. There can be powerful pressure applied to a family by the church, much less so a school. Does a priest not have a responsibility to a greater moral veracity than a teacher? Is the abuse of the position of trust held by a priest not worse than that of a school teacher?

Given this highly structured organisation with a potent hold over it's congregation has been shown to be riddled with abusive perverts, has been shown to facilitate their abuse and has shown an utterly contemptible lack of sympathy and honesty to the victims, why would someone come to a board like this to argue it's not the problem some think? Even if you believe it, and I think it's safe to say the typical Catholic can (must!) believe just about anything, is it really dignified to come to a forum that will clearly be frequented by abuse victims in order to suggest it's all been blown out of proportion and, anyway, the UN are just as bad but the media keep it a secret?

The current pope appears to be a very good man. It's a shame so many of his priests are not. It's an even greater shame so many of his flock are disgusting, morally vacuous sniveling apologists.

Certainly in the UK, children are more likely to be abused by a family member than a stranger (or, I would hazard a guess, a priest).
I don't really adhere to any particular religion but there exist REAL men of God in all of them.

100 times more likely???

That's simply because the amount of children in the US public educational system probably outnumber those in the Catholic church system by 100 to 1.

It's like saying people who fly 100 times per year are 100 times more likely to die in a plane crash than those who only fly one day per year.

Man, I hate misleading statistics. I really do.

I'm not one to correct typos in people's posts, but since you aren't a native speaker of English, I'll just politely point out that "Cavalry" is the horseback branch of the armed forces, while "Calvary" is the site of Jesus' crucifixion.

As to the reason for the title, it's pretty clear that father James is a martyr for whom Jesus is an ideal model for life and conduct, and who is willing to give up his life for his faith (unlike the other priest, to whom he says "You should have been an accountant")

Thanks !
It's not because I'm not a native English speaker, it's because I'm slightly dyslexic, and without you, I'd be still thinking the mount was named after some kind of horseman exploit..! :-p

Sorry about that!
What's your native language?
In my case, spanish for Calvary is "Calvario", which means, besides the place of "Via Crucis" (I'm not catholic, but I live in a spanish speaking catholic country), "
Series or succession of hardships and sorrows", and that's exactly what Father James and most of the characters went through.
It's terrible how much damage The Catholic Church has done since medieval times, but you can't blame on innocent people. This is a strong and well made film, though.

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.

It might help if you took the trouble to get the title correct it is Calvary not Cavalry, native english speaker or not you could at least copy it correctly. A quick Google search would have given you the answer or even Sunday school lessons you might recall.

And if you had taken the time to look at the link that the OP found in his search, which included the word Calvary, you could easily have deducted that the word Cavalry was just a typo in the post. By a dyslectic non-native speaker. So, get off your high horse.

Calvary as of this movie, represents all the trouble that the father must go through from the day he is threatened until he gets murdered... is all the suffering knowing someone will kill him within a week... his dog gets killed, his confrontation with the people of the town, his problem with alcohol, his church gets burnt down and finally he gets killed...
