Calvary Meaning

The word Calvary refers to Via Dolorosa/Way of Suffering, an actual street in two parts in The Old City of Jerusalem, Jesus's path that he walked with the cross to his crucifiction. There are 14 stations with crosses and pictures from the trial by Pilate to his entombment.

However, as many people were unable to travel to the Holy Land, from the 17th century Franciscan missions established hundreds of Calvaries all around Europe so believers could walk the pilgrimage without traveling to the actual scene.

I guess the film shows Father James' suffering for the sins of the Catholic Church from his sentencing to his death, NOT strictly following the original Calvary.

I don't really come from outer space.

Thank you for that. I had been wondering what a calvary was (was minutes away from looking it up). It makes sense. As the calvary was a more nearby alternative representing the street where Jesus walked, Fr James was a close-at-hand representation of Jesus himself, dying for the church's sins and the town's for that matter.
