anyone else disappointed in the ending? Is it meant to be 'tim' at the end in the field? I hate endings like that!!

I think it's obviously Jim as an older man, thinking back. It turns the film from a depressing one into a positive one also (well, positive for the Aussie, not so positive for the poor Chinese guy).

We see that the Chinese guy gets killed while Jim is taken away in a truck, supposedly to become a PoW. The final scene shows the cornfields that we see when there's a brief scene of Jim's wife waiting for him to come home.

So, basically, he survives his ordeal.

Alternatively, it could be the Elysian Fields of his death, as in "Gladiator." The scenes shot in Australia seemed like dreams to me.

But I'm glad to think about your version.
