Unfortunately, they're necessary...

A while back I was describing the 3 general groups of people (to my young nephew) when it came to toy collecting. The first gets excited over toys and watches reviews on youtube and has Trek, wars, transformers, etc in their closet and on their shelves. For them its about the collecting itself, its about the appreciation of owning something so cool. I would be a member of that group.

Then you have the people that think toys are for children and stopped being interested at 10. Now thats not a bad thing, for them anyway, however its when they start judging the first group and looking down on us for it -thats when it bothers me a lot.

Then you have the group that the host of this show belongs to -the traders. They too usually belong to the first group but have allowed the money and/or greed of collecting creep into their souls. On one hand you hate these bastards, because you KNOW they arent looking at the toy as something to be appreciated. They see it as a pay day and in the back of their minds they hope to find some stupid guy with too much money that has no life, no girlfriend, and is so far gone from reality he's willing to fork up 5000 dollars for whatever he has. THAT is what comes off about this host and I think its what people keep picking up on 24/7 with this show. However much we may dislike the trader, we also need them.

Its a double edged sword because we hate their prices and their greed but at the same time they're the ones digging through boxes and making the effort to find this stuff to bring to market. Without them, we wouldnt be able to collect as much and that would make me sad. :( In a way its a great reflection of how our country operates... What do you guys think?

I myself belong to the first group and I've never been a fan of people who are just in it for the money. Although without them drumming up interest in this, I suppose it wouldn't be as popular. I mean, people can do what they want with their stuff, but I like stuff because I like it and I want it. I don't like buying this just to sell them off to someone later. It's always been kinda odd to me that some people seem to like toys so much and cherish them, but then they turn right around and sell them.

I'm a collector but I also deal. Nothing big like a shop or an ebay store. Just a shelf at a consignment shop. But I enjoy the dealing aspect of the hobby just as much as collecting. I enjoy purchasing huge lots, keeping one or two items for my own collection and re-sell everything else. This process pretty much pays for my hobby. But I understand the stigma attached to dealers, but they are not all creepy little pests like Jordan.

Hope I didn't come across as a hater. As I said it's your stuff and you can do what you want. I just don't get how some people seem to have things they really cherish, but then get rid of them for money. I understand if you need the cash. There are probably things I've outgrown and that I could get rid of, yet they still have a nostalgic thing to them.

I feel the same way... I LOVE all of my collection but sadly I don't see it on my shelves as much anymore. :( I've been moving a lot and every time I move something gets broken! So now its all sitting in boxes for safe keeping. You have to be careful when it comes to collecting anything because there's a fine line between collecting and unhealthy hoarding. Case in point, look at those poor bastards on american pickers. Collect what you love, but dont let it rule your life.
