No Love for Girl's Toys

This show had me excited but it's sad to see girl's toys only mentioned marginally. From my childhood era alone you have so much good stuff: She-Ra, Jem, Barbie, Lady Lovely Locks, Herself the Elf, Charmkins, Rose Petal, Strawberry Shortcake, My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch Kids, Poochie. Where's the love?

I think he did cover Strawberry Shortcake in one episode, he said he could smell the doll before he got it out of the box...assuming he meant the scent was strawberry

reply

Barbies from the 50s or 60s have been on the show.

Regrettably, female collectors are still somewhat of a minority in the hobby of toy collector. They are rising in prominence as of late, but it will still take a bit of time to shed the "boy's club" image of toy collecting.
In the 90's, female toy collectors were practically non existent. But their numbers have been rising, as girls who grew up in the 90's are now getting nostalgic for the excellent toys they grew up with (I have had a lot of girls in my shop making MMPR purchases, for example).
So just give it time... equal opportunity toy collecting representation is on it's way!

But we all remember girls toys from tv ads. Or if you had a sister and had to spend half your time at TRU in the girls section waiting for them to pick out something. I wouldn't mind seeing more segments featuring girl toys for the nostalga.

Who runs Barter Town?!?!

I agree; it annoys me that when he sees dolls, he usually throws them aside and doesn't give any information about them.

I hear ya. I'm a guy in my forties and had most of those toys made for boys that Jordan buys but I also have fond memories of the toys my sister and female friends had growing up like Strawberry Shortcake, Holly Hobbie, Sea Wees, Sunshine Fun Family, Barbie, Starr, My Friend Becky, Rainbow Brite, etc.

I remember as a kid Strawberry Shortcake smelling good as hell. I didn't mind my sister playing with those things next to me while Cobra was destroying a team of Joe scrubs that were NOT on my X-mas list. But yeah that strawberry smell was like crack.

Steve says he likes girl toys. Maybe they can have him talk about them if Jordan won't.

reply

That's a great idea. I'd like to see an episode with Steve looking for girls toys and dolls. I think I saw an Isis figurine, that someone was buying, on the last episode and they said nothing about it.

reply

I like Steve. He's a funny-looking little guy, but seems nice as he doesn't come across as a creep like Jordan does. I'm kinda surprised they haven't done anything with She-Ra yet since that tied into a popular boys toy line.

reply

There sadly isn't as much of a market for girls toys. If they won't make him money, why "waste" screen time on them. Though I am surprised that he doesn't track down more My Little Pony merch since that's popular again.

She-Ra is also very hot right now. It depends on the girl property. As you said, MLP is huge right now, Strawberry Shortcake is always good, She-Ra is insane... Care Bears sell well; just not in the huge sums of cash the others do. There are some girl lines that do quite well; however, sadly, for right now at least it is still very much a boy's game.

For my sisters 30th b-day I thought it would be a fun idea to get her a vintage MLP... and then I saw the prices... It was like shopping for that vintage Star Wars 1985 Droids line. Crazy high "Buy it Now" prices and bid wars to no where. I'm never entertaining that idea again!

reply

Dude, I have about 20 loose vintage MLP's that the wife and I sell for about $5 a pop.. PM me next time.
