So Alex is sane in one scene and insane in the next????

He reassures his gf in one scene that he's going to protect her and not let anything happen to here and that he promises to get her out of there and then the next scene he is evil and wants to murder her so that he can escape? There was no struggle or conflict within him. He just brutally beats her head in, shows NO remorse or emotion and almost seems to enjoy it. SO unbelievable. There was 0 transition from him being loving and caring with her to being insane and wanting to brutally murder her and then having an evil grin on his face at the end of the movie. You just want him to die. He was the most unlikeable character (even worse than his mentally disabled roommate) and the worst actor of the bunch hands down.

I was a bit surprised by his apparent 180 personality as well when I first saw this film but having watched it a second time, I think that he comes across as an amoral dickhead from the start. He never seems to be that perturbed by anything (including the deaths of his 'friends')and seems devoid of any strong emotion unless he's directly affected...

The whole movie made no sense, just move on with your life :P

I think he was manipulating her when he was reassuring her. He needed someone to go with him and film, so he tried to give her strength by feeding her lust for him.
