He said it himself, he's compulsive. If he'd won, he'd have found a way to lose it all again.

I've known compulsive gamblers who blown it all when they could've easily cashed out. I've known people who repeatedly take their winning situations in life and turn them all to shite.

I've heard lots of reasons explaining the phenomenon: they hate themselves and need to lose, they don't feel worthy, they honestly think they'll continue winning, they feel more in control when they lose, etc. Since I personally have never done this to myself, I can't speak for which of those reasons are true, if any are.

But it's definitely something that actually happens.

I was in the Bellagio one night watching a Roulette wheel on the main concourse there. A little squirt type guy walked up and thru the throng, set 6 $100 bills on red. They took it, spun it and he landed on it. Just like that. Took his winnings and disappeared into the crowd.
