To all the haters-What shows do you like?

Just curious what shows you like that are on air currently.

reply

I'd like to know too!

....patiently waiting

reply

I like Golden Boy. (Especially Theo James' pretty lips.)But my fave shows are Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Walking Dead, Downton Abbey, and Grimm. My all-time fave is The Wire.

My current guilty pleasure is "Banshee," which airs on Fridays on Skin-e-max. Check out the first 8 eps on On Demand! :-D

reply

I gave up on Banshee after 5 episodes. I think it's exploitative, nonsensical trash. Really a letdown, as I was looking forward to it for a long time!

OP-- the problem with GB is it follows NCIS, and those viewers won't follow a different program. In fact, Tuesdays at 10pm on CBS is just a problematic timeslot, as is this show being launched at midseason.

CBS can't buy a midseason hit. At least this show hasn't been canceled four episodes in as is typical of CBS midseason shows for years...

Best hope for this show, word of mouth, or the producers get another network to pick it up. This show would be a hit on NBC. I can also see it on TBS.

But getting a show moved is rare.

reply

I like this show.
GB is trying so hard to do the right thing but:
*He wants to take the shortest path to the destination
*Help when the plea comes from the loser girl who can't tell the truth to save her live
*Protect the good person who broke the law but in his eyes protected her son
*Suck up to the Commishiner who says, "Scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. I have to say he is just plain stupid sometimes. He has alot to learn.
I think it's funny that people say, "He isn't a likable character." This is what people go through in real life. He lives in the world of shades of gray and not black and white like most stars on TV shows.

The other shows I watch are:
My favorite show is Person of Interest
Criminal Minds but that is just getting wierd
I watch both NCIS because because my mom likes them. I can do without them. I don't understand what is so great about them. They're both kind of boring
Both CSI
Continuum-Not a great show but interesting The lead has moral delimas. She is in the past and her choices can not affect the future
Bill O'Reilly, Hannity and Cuvuto(Yes that's right I watch Fox News)

reply

Sewoodson:

Everything you watch is basically on CBS? That's interesting. No F/X, AMC, HBO, Showtime? Just wondering...

reply

MsWhat,

Yes you're right almost everything I watch is on CBS. To add to that I used to watch Good Wife, I didn't like the main characters only the guest, somewhere along the line I just gave it up. Also, used to watch Hawaii Five-o but it is bad and really no worth my time.

I'll watch Revolution on NBC when it comes back on.

I forgot about Burn Notice on USA. That has really gone down hill so I may give that up too.

No F/X. They look like good shows but I have things to do and I don't want to sit in front of the TV or DVR everything and that would be easy for me to do. I love dramas and so hate reality TV.

I don't have HBO or Showtime too much money. They do look like they have some good shows but I'll just have to live vicarously through everyone else telling me about them.

Honestly I wish I could get to a place were I don't even want to watch TV. How do these people make so much money pretending? Didn't we do that when we were kids? I didn't make any money.

I'm not strong enough to just turn the TV off. I don't know what I would do. The thought is scary.

reply

Thanks for your reply. I'm always curious about what others are watching!

You shouldn't feel guilty about watching tv. We all need our pastimes. To me acting is an art. If we didn't have tv, we'd go out to watch movies or go to the theater. If this was ancient Rome, we'd go see gladiator fights to the death, so we've come a long way!

reply

You're right about that. One of my favorite movies is Gladiator. I watch it every few months. Yea I would probably be at the coliseum watching the gladiators but I really don't want them to fight to the death.

I don't go to the movies. I'm usually disappointed. Can't remember the last time I went to the movies. I just wait for it to come out on DVD.

reply

The odd thing about my TV viewing is that I hate it. I would rather be outside doing things than watching TV but the injuries I got when I was a cop caught up on me. On the bad days I have it is difficult to walk or stand so I have a choice of laying down in bed staring at a blank wall or staring at a TV. Fortunately there are a lot more good days where I am able to get out and do things, then there are days that I spend watching TV. The past few weeks I have spent most of my time watching TV and I have enough stuff stored on my hard drive to keep me occupied. I think it is a sad waste of time for people that are capable to have a active life to spend a lot of hours in front of a TV, but for some people it gives them a way to take their mind off of the pain they are in.

I went through two knee surgeries over ten years ago (one on each knee) and it looks like I can't put off going thru another surgery again. Strange as it may seen one of my most relaxing enjoyable pastimes was shooting. If you have never done it you would be surprised how relaxing it is to put holes in a piece of paper. When you concentrating shooting your mind has no time to worry about other things.

I can't wait till I get the operation and get my knees fixed so I can get out and do things instead of watching TV

I'm sorry to hear about your knee problems :( Hope that the surgery will help you regain your active life!

reply

silverr8c,

Sorry to hear about your injuries. I'm sure that being a policeman is a strenuous job emotionally and physically.

reply

Thank's for the kind words and support. When I took a look at the long list of shows I watched it made me realize that it is way too much TV for a normal healthy person to watch that much TV and I decided to explain why the list is that long. I just wanted to make it clear that under normal conditions I would not spend that much time in front of a TV. But in my situation having a long list of shows in my DVR comes in handy on those nights when the pain keeps me awake and I need something to distract me.

I loved my job and am proud of the work I did when I look back and think about the things I saw and did and the people I helped there is no doubt I would do it over again if i had the chance, Heck I would probably still be doing it today if I didn't get injured.

Even with the injuries I am still grateful to have been able to do a job I enjoyed and in some small way made this world a better place to live.

You should learn how to stream TV shows on the 'net. You can see a lot of good stuff that way, even stuff from HBO and Showtime.

"I think it is a sad waste of time for people that are capable to have a active life to spend a lot of hours in front of a TV, but for some people it gives them a way to take their mind off of the pain they are in."

I know Banshee doesn't have the powerhouse writing of say, The Wire, but, like Abba and Barry Manilow, it's my "guilty pleasure" until Mad Men, Breaking Bad come back on tv!

I agree Banshee is probably the most unashamedly tacky and unbelievable show I've seen next to Spartacus. I keep watching it though something's wrong with me. You even missed out on quite a few of the most ridiculous moments too if you've only seen 5 episodes

I just watch Banshee to see what happens after the credits.

Before you start stereotyping, I love NCIS (both), and when GB first came on, I wasn't sure but gave it a shot. The more I watched, the more I liked it.

I am REALLY unhappy about it being cancelled. Especially the way the finale ended and now we'll never know the rest of the story.

Being a mid-season replacement, this could have run through the summer and gained followers.

Problem is, there are more mindless dweebs out there that would rather watch "reality" crap like Survivor and Amazing Race and have no clue what a storyline is. Why do you think we know what a Honey Boo Boo is?

reply

I am not a hater, so I wont tell you!

Seriously! I'll try to sum them up ...for me basically!
And rate them on how much I found them entertaining and/or I want to watch their episode when it's out.

Golden Boy (6/10) (Good enough cast, mild curiosity about the characters, don't know if it's going to end uo somewhere with this 7y difference. Probably wont.)

Red Widow (5/10) (To pass the time, not real interest)

Motive (4/10) (Not sure if I like the fact that they showing who the killer is from the start, although in one episode at least (the one with the guy from the airport and the waitress) they show that you can have plot-twists even if you know the killer. Have episodes 6,7,8 pending. It doesn't excites me much.)

Scandal (7/10) (When I discover it there were more than 10-15 episodes out so I did a marathon. Generally I like series with the white house, presidents etc. Either comedy or drama. Didn't like it much from the beginning. It grew on me later.)

Person of Interest (5/10) (It's boring me, but there are a few goo episodes here and there. Don't like the filler episodes. Just wanna know about the (how many are they?) arch-enemies and the machine)

Vegas (6/10) (Good cast. Some thing I don't like that much, but overall when it's out, I will see it!)

Elementary (6/10) (How many S. Holmes can we have. Really. So many variations. A few good episodes here and there. Difficult to challenge the intelligence of modern viewers though.)

The Americans (7/10) (A few weeks ago I put a 4-5/10 for entertainment and an 8/10 for the production and the actors. Now it's getting more interesting for me. Doesn't bore me like the first (very good otherwise) episodes.)

House of Lies (7/10) (Really liked the Mat Damon episode! Especially the end. There are some pointless angles in the script(s) but it's trying to be entertaining (with the inclusion of the sex scenes).)

Arrow (5/10) (Like it, hate it, laughed with it. Anyway it joggles between 6 and 4)

I am watching some of the 21' quirky comedies (Mindy project, Go-on, New girl, Rules of engagement) also.

and oh! I forgot..

The Mentalist (1/10) (Only care about the identity of RJ. The 5th season is boring, without purpose and unattractive. Now that I learned about a 6th season renewal, I wont bother anymore and I will read the name of the killer in wikipedia!)

Really liked the Boss (9/10), Newsroom (9/10), Homeland (8/10).
Someone said that Newsroom is back soon! Yey!!

It is an abomination that you have Scandal listed as 7/10 and Person of Interest as 5/10.

Of yours, here's what I would rate them:

Golden Boy-6.5/10
Red Widow-4/10 (only saw Pilot, which was the first two episodes)
Motive-No idea what this is
Scandal-6/10
Person of Interest-9/10
Vegas-5/10 (stopped watching this pretty early)
Elementary-7.5/10
The Americans-6.5/10
House of Lies-4/10 (stopped watching this after 3 or 4 episodes, thought it was just an excuse to interject sex into every storyline, and not even Cheadle could save this for me)
Arrow-6.5/10
The Mentalist-never had any interest, never seen an episode

I forgot...

The Following (7/10). Just saw an episode. Is interesting enough and the main actors seem more comfortable with their roles.

I actually liked GB very much in the beginning, it seemed to have potential to be something new and interesting, but now (closer to the end of the first season) its CBS-ness is showing through it too much and case-of-the-week stuff tends to be very boring.

Characters seem to be underdeveloped, the only one who seems to be grounded and believable is played by Chi McBride.

Ongoing story lines seem to be too on-the-nose sometimes, like the only purpose of Margot being there is to provide the conflict between Walter and that Mayor's man, to make his future ascent seem even more difficult. Otherwise it looks strange that a playboy, like he was shown in the beginning, would settle with someone for no apparent reason - no development there, just one interview and then they jumped into the bed, one night stand would be more realistic. There's like zero chemistry between these two characters/ or maybe even actors. There were more chemistry between Walter and Deb, honestly... Mother-father story and torturing of the sister with Walter's overprotectiveness is getting tired...

It seems by now that they added too much to it while trying to keep the CBS format of the boring case of the week, as a result we have not enough in-depth development. I am still watching it, but it annoys me a lot to see it getting worse.

So even though I started as a fan of this show, my feelings about it are now shifting closer and closer to the opposite and I wish they put it out of its misery already and free Theo James for some other more fabulous shows on more interesting networks...

maybe he could join John Malkovich in Crossbones, Theo would make an amazing pirate, lol

I like TV better than movies and I take my viewing seriously - I avoid spoilers, watch episodes in order and pay full attention. But there are so many new shows coming out every season and so few hours in the day that I only have time to stick with the very best.

Reality TV, sitcoms, cookie cutter spin-offs of established but boring procedurals (I'm looking at you, "CSI") I don't even bother with, but most of the other scripted hour long shows I check out. I track upcoming shows on Sidereel, and when the pilots air I download, watch, and sort. The vast majority go straight in the trash ("Golden Boy" was one, and that was an easy decision - the pilot sucked very convincingly), but some of the iffier shows get some more attention. Three, four, five episodes, before I decide they're too predictable or they're dragging, or going nowhere, and quit.

The shows that grab me, I keep watching, if I have time - if I don't, I save them for later. Some shows get shelved for years. Some shows that start out strong lose their momentum after a great season or two ("The Walking Dead", for example) and I quit them then. Basically, I rarely waste my time watching a show week after week that isn't wowing me. I don't watch anything just out of habit - as it is, there aren't enough hours in the day for me to take in all the AWESOME culture, I'm not going to waste my time daydreaming through the 134th mediocre episode of "House".

Currently I'm actively tracking and watching a handful of shows (most are currently on hiatus), and of that handful, the only one that's still really strong is "The Good Wife". The rest I could take or leave. Even "Downton Abbey" and "Game of Thrones" are showing their flaws, but four seasons later, "The Good Wife" is still smart as a whip and densely packed with greatness.

So you see, when the bar is set somewhere around first season "House" just to pass, a heavily flawed show like "Golden Boy" is not going to make the cut.

I've been doing this for a few years now, and I'm getting pretty good at predicting cancellations. "Golden Boy" immediately struck me as one of those pilots that was picked up by idiotic or nepotistic mistake. Not only wasn't it good, it wasn't even mediocre. Call me a hater if it comforts you, but the truth is "Golden Boy" is just a poor quality show. For a show this flawed to stay alive, it has to be marketed towards demographics with low standards: either teenagers or "zombie viewers" (the working stiffs who zone out drooling in front of comfortingly repetitive procedurals every night as a way to relax). "Golden Boy" was too weird for the latter group - it tried to target a more astute demographic, but failed to meet that demographic's standard quality requirements. And there you go.

reply

Snobbery is a bad habit (unless it's in regard to reality TV). Golden Boy was one of the better new network dramas this season (not great, but well above average), so your comments are really off base (the major missteps with the show were the title, the lead casting, and the dumb cocksmanship between Walter and Arroyo, but it worked on nearly every other level).

You basically name dropped a few shows, while completely ignoring some of the supposedly best shows of the last 10 years. I can guarantee you're missing out on a lot of good TV solely due to your snobbery. "Serious" TV viewers watch a lot of TV, and can judge shows on what they're trying to be as opposed to some apples to oranges standard.

reply

Why so defensive? You'd think I'd insulted your beloved grandmother.

Anyway, based on these ratings of yours from up-thread:

Golden Boy-6.5/10
Person of Interest-9/10
Arrow-6.5/10

I'm going to guess that your opinions on TV related matters aren't terribly well-considered.

"Arrow" is a teenybopper abomination worse than "Twilight". I suffered through three episodes because I'm a comics fan and badly wanted it to be watchable, but alas: 4 is a generous rating for that piece of guano.

I saw an entire season of "Person of Interest" because I happened to have it and I was home sick, but while I don't hate it it's absolutely nothing special. Charming leads, okay story lines, typically laughable McGuffin-style science and just generally average in most respects. It's cute and tongue-in-cheek at times, which I like, but also very formulaic and episodic, which is dull. I'd give it a strong passing grade of 6.5, and maybe stretch that to a 7.5 for the rare particularly strong episode, but I don't see how you'd justify giving it a 9.

While I am occasionally guilty of elitism and snobbery, when comes to TV I make a lot of room for good ENTERTAINMENT, not just spectacularly innovative and impressive, groundbreaking TV. But I have standards even for easy entertainment, as I believe everyone should. Some things are a matter of taste, but the general quality of a show is largely an objective thing - people will claim it isn't, but it is - and for an experienced viewer, it's not that hard to determine most of the time. You can probably tell a lot even by things like lighting and camera work, but I'm not consciously aware of those things; for me, the most important aspect of any work of fiction, and the aspect I understand best and know most about, is the quality of the writing, so that's what I go by. Specifically characterisation and dialogue. If those two basic, all-important aspects aren't skillfully executed even in the pilot episode (which the creators know is crucially important), the show won't be good, no matter what happens with the story lines.

When I have trouble judging is when dialogue and characterisation are pretty good, but a show has other flaws which I'm not as adept at catching, or which are just more subtle. There was nothing subtle about "Arrow" or "Golden Boy". (And what apples and oranges? I'm not comparing them to each other - I take context such as genre, network and target demographics into consideration when rating, and so while "Golden Boy" for example is less painful to watch than the atrociously stupid "Arrow", they each get a rating of 4 because that's where they place on their respective genre-adapted scales.)

The "major misstep" as you call it with "Golden Boy" was characterisation - it was atrocious. (You agree with me, really, you're just misinterpreting your dissatisfaction with the characterisation as casting and "dumb cockmanship" issues). To a lesser extent, style was also a problem. They tried to do something visually different, probably to stand out, but while it was different it was also off-putting and distracting.

Anyway, while I appreciate your concern that my snobbery might cause me to miss a lot of great shows, don't worry. I have my ear to the ground. I dismissed "Supernatural" as another dumb monster-of-the-week teenybopper show (and in my defense, the pilot and much of the first season are weak and lack-lustre), but after the show did what it did in its later seasons, I heard about it and I went back. There is always going to be the rare show which appears to be crappy on the surface and/or to begin with, but turns out to be mind-blowing, but they're rare and my method is self-correcting. I'm sure as hell not going to watch bad shows on the off-chance they might improve.

reply

Anyone who thinks Person of Interest isn't something special has something very wrong with them, or needs to go back and watch all of it. I tend not to trust the taste of anyone who thinks it's meh or whatever. It's easily one of the best written TV shows on network TV (it's also got a massive big backstory in place, and I can tell you for a fact you are missing out by writing it off the way you have), and is easily the best hybrid serialization on TV (Grimm is also an excellent hybrid serialization). For Arrow, you have to get past the CW issues. Every one of their shows has a certain amount of audience pandering they do to teenagers (it's in the music choices, party scenes, and overabundance of pretty people). It's part of the territory. However, Arrow is able to significantly get past those kind of issues, and was easily the most pleasant surprise of the TV season (I am a CW hater, so I am not saying this lightly, as I don't watch any other show on there).

Your main issues seem to be that you hate procedurals, and you hate non-serialized storylines. Well, it's pretty obvious you're not from the States, so you might be surprised to know that serialized television rarely works at the network level. They just don't tend to connect with audiences as much because they require audience investment, and if a show gets canceled, the audience doesn't want to give another a shot.

As for style, Golden Boy was definitely in the CBS house style, but it was much better done technically than most of the CBS shows (I would love for most of that production crew to move over to Elementary to help solve the myriad of technical problems that show has).

Mostly, what I fascinating about you is that you seem to think your opinion is the only one that matters. In a whole lot of situations, most people would completely disagree with you. That doesn't mean you're right, it means you need to try less hard to pick stuff apart (I'm a technical person in the industry, but story and characters are the most important things to me in a TV show). If you're just wanting to watch great television all the time, watch Sherlock. Very few shows hit that standard, and maybe TV is just not for you. I personally prefer classic TV to most of today's shows, but there are still some great ones out there that you are obviously missing. How old are you, and what are all the shows you watch/watched/love? It would be much more instructive as to why I think your tastes are kind of off.
