I could barely hear the dialog, but then any sound effect or blaring music sting would practically blow out my speakers.
Loud doesn't equal scary.
The sound drove us nuts! Why do so many films have issues with sound mixing? We had to close the back door (it is summertime and super hot) as the loud parts made the neighbors dog bark! You could not hear the dialogue! Yes it was meant to add atmosphere, but still there are limits!

I am halfway through the movie, and I think I am going to give up. A jarring jump scare every 1-1½ minutes, with inaudible dialogue in between.
Example (faintest spoiler): Josh sitting next to piano with bat in hand, mumbling inaudibly. Josh leaves the room. Parting shot is a jump scare of an otherworldly Josh sitting on the piano chair, screaming HELP at the top of his lungs, soundtrack deafening. The shot has - of course - no bearing on the movie plot whatsoever. It is simply there because the creators ralised they had no jump scare for that 1½ minute sequence.
So bad.

It only felt a little too much for me when they showed the title of the movie, both in the beginning and the end. Its like they double the volume for this part.
The volume difference was somewhat in the movie but I don't think it was as bad as the thread starter makes it out to be. About the same as most horror movies.

Agreed. I am at 48:00 and so pissed off. Either I turn the audio down so I can barely understand the normal dialogue or I go deaf. Same with The Conjuring. I like James Wan, but this is ludicrous and takes away a lot of my viewing pleasure.
