Something i didn't understand. HELP

id i miss something? I must have. Why did Kyle kill Kate's husband? I was expecting that he had an obsession about her or something and that kidnapping Karen was just a mean to get closer to Kate. But then the story of him being the senador's son came up and I got confused. If he was keeping Karen as some kind of revenge, why the hell did he kill Kate's husband? What does one thing have to do with the other?
Sorry for the english. I, as being an avid watcher of crappy tv movies and passionate about the sublime art of tv movie writting , really must have this question solved. Help!
