In the trivia, it mentions there are references to other Steve Martin movies.
I'm wondering if the fact that Captain Smeck's nose was always straightish was a reference to Steve's character in Roxanne.

The character's face shares features with Steve's face in real life (green eyes, grin, etc)

Oh....I wonder...when Smeck was running around with silly things for clothing, then, was this more than just an alien using earth things incorrectly or was that a reference to The Jerk?
