So much better than the film.

The 2012 kids were sexier and better looking. (sorry but those 80's actors were really ugly) We saw heaps better adult/parent charactizations. And the tv show took way more risks than the film.

I'm sure I recall Kathy Lette saying in an interview that the movie was highly restricted by censorship laws at the time. Because of this they were not allowed to depict the characters as they really were, i.e. 13-year-olds still very much living under their parents' rules. The actresses who played Debbie and Sue were around 17 or 18, and some of the others were even older so the true essence of the book was largely lost.

I agree that the mini-series is far better in this regard, not just due to relaxation of censorship laws but also because it's necessary to compress the story to fit into a movie whereas a mini-series allows more detail.

Still, the movie is a cult classic in its own right - certainly among those of us who saw it in our youth. :)
