What happened to Alex?

Whilst I admit I didn't watch it intently - my kids were watching it- pretty sure they didn't mention where Alex was (Jodie Foster's character) from the first movie. Such a major character in the 1st movie - it's strange that the character was left out of the sequel

Around 1/3 of the movie Nim mentions Alexandra, saying where she is at that moment. She does not tell how she knows that to Edmund.

"She's actually in Bora Bora right now, researching her next book."

Excellent thanks - as I said I wasn't listening to it word got word so I thought I may have missed it.
