Oh, that does look promising. Thanks for the heads up!

Should prove very popular among fans of North & South!

I couldn't tell from the info you linked-- is this program already showing in the UK, or is there a release date yet? Thanks, sg.

reply

No. It was only filmed at the beginning of this year, and "The Mill" seems to be a working title only. I haven't seen any trailors on the TV yet, but there are quite a few articles about it rattling around on the 'net.

What made me think N & S just might be mentioned.

The Calla Lilies are in bloom again.

I read that the doctor employed by the Gregs at Quarry Bank Mill was Elizabeth Gaskell's uncle. If this is true she must surely have been inspired by this to write North and South.

reply

It is true. Her uncle was Peter Holland.

She was inspired by her observations at the mill to write her novel, Mary Barton, which, like North and South, is about mill owners and workers.

Thank you for the clarification. I wasn't sure if I'd read it on Wikipedia which is why I was hesitant about it's accuracy.

That's fascinating!

No wonder Mrs. Gaskell had such a fine working insider knowledge of industrial works.

Though living in Manchester then, guess she could not help but pick up alot of it in her daily life.

It's amazing we were all given people like Mrs. Gaskell, Jane Austen and others like them that felt the need and had the talent and verbal skill to put down on paper their life and times and do such a good job of bringing previous generations to life for us.

I keep meaning to go find her house in Manchester which has undergone several incarnations, and last time I heard huge sums were being raised to restore the Grade II property. Though it also was being used by the U. of Manchester at some point. It certainly needs a blue plaque...ha.

Has anyone visited it and has it yet been restored?
