Aspect Ratio

I am enjoying this series but cannot understand why it has been shot in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 which gives you the option of viewing it with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen or if you wish to fill the screen completely, you have to chop off any action at both sides of the picture. Any ideas?

I don't know the answer but I hadn't even noticed until you just pointed it out, so it obviously didn't make much difference to my viewing! I presume it's something to do with better quality production value.
