The Hair Cut Scene

OK, I'm FINALLY getting a chance to watch the first season, but I just don't get the hair cutting scene. Why did she flip out at her hair being cut? Hair grows back. So why did she act like it was such a big deal?

I think it was just the humiliation. The sight of a shaved woman would have also looked weirder then than now.

She was also being forced to have her hair completely shorn off. For many people, hair is a part of their identity. Having it forcibly taken away is a cruel punishment and like the other poster said, humiliating.

Sorry it's been so long for a reply; I'm back on vacation now, and I've returned to an area that actually airs this show, or at least, used to. Thank you both for your replies. I still wish that the U.S. (perhaps BBCA) would air this from the beginning so I could have a chance to watch it in its entirety and not just catch bits of the previous year when whichever channel that does air it, chooses to put the previous year on to get people caught up with the show. Perhaps it's on Youtube?

Incidentally, I'd be happy to purchase all seasons on VHS or DVD, but they'd have to be Region 1, and I suspect at this rate, it's only available on Region 2.

I've only just now watched the series on Amazon Prime. I think there was also a sort of Biblical element to it. Somewhere in the Bible it says that a woman's hair is her "crowning glory", so before the 20th-century people had this belief that women should never have short hair.
