You're pretty close to the mark. Shira and Yochay go to the rabbi to obtain his blessing, but he refuses after Shira's irresolution and immaturity are made clear to him. The astute old man feels she comes to this agreement without her full understanding of the matter: when he questions her, her answer is the exact opposite of what he's expecting... As for Rivka, Shira's mother, once she catches on that the rabbi didn't approve of the marriage, she's simply shocked that it wouldn't work out--and probably has an inkling as to why, knowing her daughter.
