White people problems

Sorry, had to say it. And I'm white. Not a guilty liberal white, either. There seems to be a genre of these films, possibly because money gets so concentrated into a few areas, the people in them seem to think an east coast liberal arts private school education is some kind of universal experience, and important. Their ideas of suffering would be laughed at by most of us in the 95%, but for them, mommy missing a piano recital has scarred them for life. Anyway, flame away!

ehhh

i feel similar. i found it ridiculously overwrought.

at the same time, this *beep* is all relative. the human experience is subjective and it's unrealistic to ask that all well-off white people have no problems.

So you think that losing your mother/wife and trying to cope with it somehow is a "white people problem"?

reply

@gizemkuster - well said! Preposterous post. As if it's somehow inappropriate to make films about people unless they are non-white and in some war torn developing country. Idiotic.

My God, it's full of stars!

gizemkuster & sc_taylor: well said. In this day and age of social media and allowing anyone to comment on practically anything, you are going to have positive and negative comments from every angle.

but for them, mommy missing a piano recital has scarred them for life.

How about mom committing suicide and not finding out the truth until three years later. Losing one's parent at a young age has nothing to do with race. It's a universal grief.

And all the pieces matter (The Wire)

Funny it's always these self-loathing, middle class white people that complain about "white people problems".

Well guess what, I'm not white or wealthy and don't have an arts education and found the themes in this film - guilt, loss, mourning, adolescence, repression, grief etc. - universal and relatable. It's called empathy. I suppose white people can find nothing of value in the stories of Nelson Mandela, or The Colour Purple or Do the Right Thing or Rashomon either by that logic.

Anyway, you knew you were going to get flamed, so obviously you knew your post was idiotic, but still - all this white liberal self-hating is so tedious.
