Last night's episode

I enjoyed last night's episode. As usual, Alfred Molina's character was the strongest. He seems to have the best handle on his character (and I like that they kept the continuity with him shaving his head last week.

At one point during the Monday Morning meeting he said "Oh, my giddy aunt!" is that a common British expression, or is it unique to Doctor Who? If it's the latter, it's very cool that they included that. The Seventh Doctor used to say that a lot. :-)

The other doctors are still hovering in cliche land, or their characters are changing too quickly for me. Dr. Park went from being aloof and superior to struggling to be more compassionate in...three episodes? When Hot Lips Houlihan made the same characger progression in MASH it took her years. What's the rush?

Ving Rhames is an excellent actor, but he seems to be playing "gruff black guy." Not a lot of shading, but at least he seems to be having fun saying lines like "she'll go through you like crap through a goose."

Sydney and Liberman are an interesting pairing, I hope they explore that some more. The overdriven/laid back dynamic could be interesting. I want her in my restaurant if I'm choking.

Bill Irwin's character is clearly meant to be the "Frank Burns" of this show - the character everybody loves to hate, grating and arrogant but also gifted so they have to put up with him. He's OK, but I'm tired of the "hey, look, he has a habit of rising onto the balls of his feet when he's talking. Let's show it 20 times." Just once or twice will do, thanks. (he also blows my mind because I remember when he was on Broadway in the 1980s doing acrobatic-type routines. I wonder if he still does that?)

Tina wasn't even really 'there' this episode. She didn't get a lot to do.

I started watching this show because I like Jamie Bamber, but so far Ty Wilson has just been sort of a one-note character for me. He's hot, he's passionate, he's very, very impulsive. He keeps doing things outside the rules of procedure yet never comes up in front of a review board - sort of like Captain Kirk.

But I still don't know very much about the character. Who is he when he's not operating? Why isn't he involved with anyone? We don't get to really see him except when he's "on" and his go-to expression seems to be "flustered surprise". I hope we get to know him better because Jamie is capable of really good acting.

Anybody else have any thoughts?

sarahb2,
I haven't really thought about the people who protray the characters. But in the characters, I see a lot of doctors I worked with over 35 years as a critical area nurse in more than a dozen hospitals from Texas to Vermont.

It would take to much space to comment on how I see these doctors, but I am concerned about the continous mention of "settling law suits" without the defendent having an opportunity to face a jury. So many people today sue just because they know the hospital (Big Businesses owning them) will settle instead of defending. And we wonder why medical cost are out of control.

Take a chance, flip a coin, everything is 50/50

In the second episode, one of the characters rightly pointed out that America needs tort reform.

I wish we had the 'loser pays' system that many European countries have.

Yorick_Brown,
I don't know what the "loser pays" system is, but I do know we need tort reform when it comes to medical lawsuits. When I was working in Houston, Texas placed a limit (cap) on the dollar amount that could be awarded in a medical lawsuit. Not sure about the details.

'Loser Pays' is just a colloquial term for a system where whoever loses a lawsuit, has to pay the winner's legal fees.

It scares away ambulance chasers and wannabe millionaires from trying to extort money from hospitals and businesses.

I was the one choking lol. She did a great job. ;) and a nice person to boot.

Really! I take it you're an actress? Anything about that job you'd like to share? I'm thinking the part where you're being wheeled to the OR with all that stuff on you and the actress who plays Sydney was pumping on your chest was probably less than comfortable!

reply

Yes..I'm an actress :)

It was not the most comfortable experience but i did my own fall stunt in the restaurant! The production and stunt team took every precaution to keep me as comfortable as possible, including a fiber class chest shield for the compressions. It was a very cool experience and it's a great show! Keep watching!

I am really enjoying the show.

Your comparisons are really similar to what I feel although for the most, but, I don't think Dr. Park is changing too much too soon, even with the case last week with the girl I could see certain realizations on Dr. Park's part where he recognizes that even if he is right, his manner leaves much to be desired. I think it rather jarred him to be taken to task about what others would deem callousness and that the patient died; it might have just been an "Oh, crap" sort of reaction, particularly with Dr. Tierney (Bunk) being seen in a similar light. Truthfully though that brusqueness would wear thin very soon.

As to Ty Wilson, that he is portrayed as an impulsive hot-shot surgeon with quite a bit of ego, even towards his colleagues, does work for me. Even when he was more or less never suffering professionally, he was haunted by the death of the boy on a personal level and he was called up to the podium so I was fine with that. This time though he didn't take a trip to the podium, he was taken to task by Hooten, even when the surgery was successful; so I am not bothered by that at all. As to his personal life there seems to be something going on with the married Tina, but, I like that it's not shown much, because quite frankly I do not need or care to see too much about it.
