As an African American who complains about the lack of black folk on TV. I realize there are less Asians on there than Blacks and Hispanics. Yeah for Keong Sim in a primetime role of substance. What does that make.....2?

I just went thru my dvr and all these shows feature an Asian. There are probably more.
Indians and Pakistans aren't considered "asian" in the broad sense of the word. In America when we say Asian we mean of the orient including but not limited to countries such as China, Japan, Korea, etc.
Words can mean many things. Technically anyone from the Americas is an "American", but it is understood that American usually refers to someone from the United States.
When Americans refer to "Asians", it is understood that it refers to what Europeans refer to as Orientals.
Russians are Asians. American is the correct nomenclature for a ctitzen of the USA. There are many people that would be referred to as "oriental" besides Chinese and Japanese. I know that when most Americans say Asian they mean someone with the Epicanthic fold which can be found on many people from many countries.
My initial post was garbled. My point was that anyone from the Americas (North & South America) is technically an American, but that term is pretty much understood to apply only to those from the United States.
The same concept applies to "Asian". When the term "Asian" is used in the United States, it is understood to refer to those with Southeast Asian/Pacific Islander origins.
No one cares about geography - they're referring to physical features.
You missed Hawaii 5-0. OMG! 2 Asians!!!! And now, cue the comment asking why all the "Asians" (using lex_clay's definition of the word) are Koreans!!! /sarcasm
Don't step on that fish, Castiel. Big plans for that fish.
Well, I apologize for my ignorance. I was speaking of China, Japan and maybe Korea. I don't usually think of ALL of Asia but it would be nice to see them on TV more often also. I stand corrected but my point was it is nice to see Asians in prominent roles not relegated to a line here or there.
PS - I like to be corrected when I'm wrong so thanks for checking me!
Maybe Korea??? How about Cambodia, Laos, Viet Nam, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Phillipines, Singapore, Thailand and almost 40 other countries?
I'm pretty sure that what lex_clay means is "East Asia." Of course, s/he should have said "East Asia" instead of using "Asia" to mean two (or "maybe" three) countries. You can't blame him/her for not knowing how to use Wikipedia.
Don't step on that fish, Castiel. Big plans for that fish.
Either way, all Lex was doing was giving kudos for there being an Asian on this show, because we don't always seem them. You sound butt hurt Klutzy that he even acknowledge them.
I seem butt-hurt? Why is that? Was it the sarcasm?
MycroftHolmes had an issue with lex's definition of "Asian," and I was half-agreeing with him/her, and half-defending lex (by saying that maybe s/he meant "East Asia" although most people know what lex meant when s/he said "Asian"). I guess it didn't come off that way. But that is why I have been replying to Mycroft, rather than lex.
By lex's definition of "Asian," there is one on the show. By Mycroft's, there are two. And yes, it is good and there should be more Asians of all kinds on TV and in film. (How's my butt-hurtness now?)
Don't step on that fish, Castiel. Big plans for that fish.
There is no such word as "GAWD." If you mean "God," say "God." If you feel compelled not to use the word "God," the English language offers you an enormous range of alternative exclamations. People should say what they mean to say.
Does every show need to represent every single ethnic group, religion, culture, sexual preference, height, weight, hair color, eye color, and hair texture on the planet?
I know this is a year late but I wanted to answer your question. Every show doesn't have to represent every anything but it would be nice to remember there are OTHER PEOPLE besides white folk. One day when you are alone and watching tv, imagine it white folk were only seen on tv in small supporting roles and blacks, asians and hispanics made up 95% of American TV. White folk would listen to the radio. We all want to see ourselves reflected on TV and in movies.
I recall a retired Hollywood producer said the sad truth is people don't want to see Orientals on TV or on screen and that's why there has never been a major Oriental acting star especially a male. Lucy Liu was fairly big at one point but has disappeared lately.
