What is their relationship? Were they former lovers? And why does she stick around? I am so curious as to her actions. I mean if I was replaced with someone else, being given a child would not appease me. And staying and watching the relationship between Lota and Elizabeth is just a little creepy. As if she is staying and waiting for a.way back in or a way to sabotage their relationship. I mean

Mary definitely did in the end and it did not turn out the way she had hoped.

I read the book that this film is based, and there Mary and Lota were lovers, even when Elizabeth comes in their lives.
It seems, just like is showed in the movie, Lota did begin the relationship with Elizabeth and Mary just had to accept that she was no longer the number one. Lota had a strong personality and everybody else just had to cope with it.
Yes, it was a very odd situation this love triangle and with a child involved but it did happen. Of course it must be terrible for Mary to see someone she loved with somebody else, right there in her face, but I think Lota was her source of money too, so she was attached in this situation.
