Hey Brits, got any more like this?

Dear Brits, this Yank just LOVES your film and tv. I find myself watching more and more BBC. I especially love your delightful dramedies, like Last Tango. And your outstanding period romances! You do those so well! I love Midsomer Murders and Rosemary&Thyme because they're set in the beautiful English countryside which I love. Do you have any other suggestions Brits?

reply

I'm not a Brit, and you've probably seen it already given your tastes, but you might like the sitcom As Time Goes By with Judi Dench. It has a similar theme of a young couple reuniting and marrying in old age.

And The House of Elliot, which you have also probably seen.

reply

Fleur_de_lis thank you for both those suggestions. I haven't seen either!

I know it's old and people say it's corny, but I used to loved Ian McShane's "Lovejoy" - set in, and actually showing a lot of, the lovely East Anglian countryside. I don't live in the UK, but this is an area I'm fond of because of travelling there as a tourist.

"All Creatures Great and Small" - another older programme set in the stunning Yorkshire Dales, and, at times, incredibly touching.

I'm a fellow Yank who has been watching British TV for years! It's usually much better than what we get (I've OD'd on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul!). We just got Netflix and many of the shows are available there, such as Sherlock (my favorite), Doc Martin (a great comedy/drama about a House-like doctor who moves to a small village and insults everyone), Wallander, with Kevin Branagh as a depressed yet dedicated Swedish cop, Foyle's War -- a WWII drama about a DI in Hastings who is eventually drawn into MI5 after the war,

Call the Midwife is good and still shown on PBS, but you have to endure LOTS of women screaming in childbirth! If you like "The Imitation Game", try "The Bletchley Circle", about what women code-breakers did after the war. I just started watching the Netflix original "The Crown" (not sure if it was made by British or Americans), about Queen Elizabeth II and her family--it's kind of Downton Abbey-ish. There's also a police drama with Sarah Lancashire (Caroline of Last Tango) as a cop out for vengeance. Haven't seen it yet. So...there are a LOT of programs to choose from!

-Those we should know elude us. But we can...love without complete understanding.

I'm American, but check out Gavin and Stacey. If you want more of a comedy then check out "keeping up appearances" or "the royle family". There's also this really interesting show called "the syndicate", although it's more of a mystery. A good drama-murder show is "Broadchurch". I watch a lot of Brit stuff...for an American.

Great list! Are there any here that you would see as featuring a great deal of the countryside? My mother-in-law LOVES everything that's set in the countryside, she watches them like travelogues! And I agree, the UK countryside is exceptionally beautiful.
