What happened to Sullivan?

I remember the last episode last year, he went on the run and FB saved him, but i can't remember if it was explained he was leaving? The new guy is OK, like him on DCI Banks, but Sullivan was kinda hot :) hee hee

I love me some cosy mysteries!!!

My question exactly. Sullivan was one good-looking man. His replacement, oh well. Very disappointed.

I was looking forward to a new episode with a slightly changed relation beteen Father Brown and Sullivan.
I guess we'll never know why he left.

reply

A slightly changed relation would have been great. Now we are back to the very overused cliche of the completely stupid DI who on top of that also seems to be a fairly unpleasant person.

exactly. he is like a caricature or something akin to a cartoon character. very disappointing addition to an otherwise very entertaining program. I think Sullivan was a much more watchable character.

reply

I love father brown but cannot stand the new policeman

reply

Me too. Get rid of this guy. He is horrible.
All he needs to do is twirl his mustache to complete his buffoonish cartoon acting of an evil pretend cop.

reply

Liked Clocking Off, so willing to give Kev (Mallory)a chance. I guess once the inspector starts to appreciate the padre they have to get rid of him to preserve the animosity. It is annoying

reply

Considering all the trouble they went to, when Inspector Valentine was written out (Hugo Speer was unavailable, due to being cast in The Musketeers), it's surprising that Sullivan just disappears without explanation. All that was needed was a single line of dialogue stating that he'd been promoted or transferred. It was the same when Susie vanished after the first season.

I agree, really annoying. What? Do they think we won't notice they've switched policemen?! Or don't they think we're going to be confused when they provide no explanation as to where the previous one has gone?😠

reply

True. But why don't they do something different? (I know, 'different' in the English cosy world is taboo.)

Just make him really stupid and lazy to keep him out of FB's way.

reply

Totally miss Sullivan this new Inspector is nothing to look at! Come On help us out! Bring back The last Inspector!!!!

The PBS television market where Father Brown is being shown locally in the U.S. is up to episode 4 of series 4. The Uncle Mirth episode.

Thus far, it appears that Inspector Mallory's mission is to make everyone angry. I notice a lot of friction even between him and his subordinates, especially Sergeant Goodfellow.

Without giving away too many spoilers, is that leading up to a plot resolution by the end of series 4? Thanks.

I was thinking the same thing. They didn't mention Sullivan leaving at all. I mean when he first came aboard at least there was closure when he took over for the first Inspector but not a mention of him at all leaving. Which, is such a disservice to his character, plus he wasn't bad to look at either, lol.

reply

Like all of you, I of course "noticed" when Inspector Sullivan disappeared from the show and was replaced by Inspector Mallory.

It may have been a bit sloppy for the producers to replace Sullivan without any explanation whatsoever, and I wonder why an otherwise well-produced show would do anything that awkward.

But what's done is done. As for the new guy, Inspector Mallory, he is a completely different character from Sullivan or even Valentine, Sullivan's predecessor. Despite a trivial 8-year difference in their ages, I think Valentine and Sullivan were essentially the same character. But you cannot say the same about Mallory. The way he is played by Jack Deam, Inspector Mallory is cantankerous, cynical, even unsavory at times. But you know what? In Mallory, I think the producers of "Father Brown" have found the perfect foil for their lead character, Father Brown.

Cheers,
Dan

I love the way British actors aren't locked into one program and can appear in more than one concurrently. I always liked Jack Deam (Ken) in DCI Banks - in fact he is the only one who, along with Stephen Tompkinson, has been in all the epidodes. I like his Mallory character here since it is written so completely differently than the two previous DIs.

reply

I totally disagree with you. He is the worst character on the show now. Every time he comes on, I want to turn it off. I cannot stand the caricature bad policemen who only needs to twirl is mustache to finish the cartoon of it off.

reply

You are right. I can’t stand the miserable ugly inspector. He doesn’t deserve a wife and children. Kick him off

reply

They went from Valentine, to Sullivan and now Mallory...Mallory is a bit of an off, Sullivan was pretty attractive, but they at least let you know why Valentine was leaving before bringing Sullivan in

reply

Never mind how nasty he is (and he is certainly pretty repulsive), is it really credible that an Inspector who so consistently arrests the wrong person could possibly still be in post? Still, I suppose that if we accept that Kembleford is the murder capital of the world, we can believe anything.

" I suppose that if we accept that Kembleford is the murder capital of the world, we can believe anything." This made me laugh so bad...it is like Rosemary and Thyme....how many bodies can you really expect to find in gardens lol

Keep watching, and you'll find out.
