I've written a LOT of post about my frustration with ABC (I'm sure some of them are here on IMDb, unless they got too old and were deleted). I boycotted altogether ABC for (I think) almost 2 years and now only watch Once Upon A Time, which I only started watching (via Netflix) after the first season aired and was renewed for a seconds season. I did this because I don't trust ABC to keep shows on the air! I was really interested in OUAT when it was announced and I was so tempted to watch it when it first aired, but I refused to be let down again.
I watched the Zero Hour pilot by accident - I downloaded it without realizing it was an ABC show. It is pretty dreadful which is really too bad because it has so many elements that I like (conspiracies, science fiction, mystery) and I love Anthony Edwards. Unfortunately the dialog is, for the most part, embarrassingly bad, the characters make no sense, the pacing is all wrong... it's a mess. It didn't have to be. That pilot and first 3 episodes must have cost a fortune and they could have made better ones for less. Oh well. Still, it had potential and I can't stand not knowing the answer to a mystery so I would have kept watching. Making a big budget mystery/thriller and then canceling it after 3 episodes is really bad business and a great way to really piss off viewers.
I've been saying for years that the networks need to start guaranteeing full seasons and/or promising not to cancel shows without wrapping them up. They are losing so many viewers with their old-fashioned business model. In an age when DVD sales, licensing to online streaming site, iTunes, etc. is a major source of revenue, it makes no sense to cancel a show prematurely! People will and do sit down and watch entire old series that they might have missed on live TV (or loved on TV and want to watch again) and pay for the privilege to do so, but are far less likely to bother when they know that the show is permanently incomplete.
RIP Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, and Pushing Daisies... the day ABC killed you all at once was the end of my relationship with that network!
