What was with this movie?

I've enjoyed all of Bhansali's movies. Yes some of them (Devdas, Hum Dil) were a little bloated in terms of length and melodrama but in general they all seemed put together. This one on the other hand...WTF? I hated it. The story was full of holes, I didn't even get what was going on half the time, the Romeo & Juliet love story didn't make any sense etc etc. Yet it seems like everyone - my middle-aged Indian neighbors, Indian friends at school - I've talked to about this movie loved it. Reviews online also loved it saying it was the director's best. WHAT? Am I missing something? I know bollywood is sometimes stupid but is everyone just overlooking how bad this movie was??

Yes absolutely! I was so perplexed when i watched Ram-Leela. Too much violence, gore, sex, kissing, attempted rape! I was like "I've had enough!" I didn't expect that at least from a director like Sanjay Leela Bhansali who gave us gems of a cinema like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Black. Even Saawariya and Guzaarish were not that bad even if they flopped at the box office. The romances in HDDCS and Devdas were heart felt and pure. Sadly, you barely feel that magic in Ram-Leela. All you get in the film is a flirty guy doing all the dirty talk with the girl and this time it's the girl who kisses the guy first and it's more of "lust" than "love" at first sight between the two. What happened to the magic man Bhansali that we knew. Why did he feel so pressurised to keep with today's trend that he went all out to promote this "cheap" little porn and I'm saying porn not a movie. How is one supposed to feel for these two "star-crossed" lovers when you cannot even feel their romance and the boundaries of their love for each other? Most of their romance was spoiled in the dirty talks about sex and kissing. The lead characters looked so confused in the second half that you feel like you watched totally different characters in the first half. The story was so badly executed. Bhansali only paid attention to the colors and splendid sets rather than the plot. And I find it so difficult to believe that even a megastar like Amitabh Bachchan has watched Ram-Leela thrice! Really? I couldn't even sit through this "torture" for the first time and he has watched it thrice! Hats off to him!
