Yet another minstrel show from Tyler Perry.

It's a little known fact that Lincoln "Stepin Fetchit" Perry was Tyler Perry's directing coach.

How is it a minstrel show? I would really like to know what makes Tyler Perry's productions minstrel shows.

reply

What he means is all the black characters in his movies potray very blatant black stereotypes. IE: Loud, obnoxious ect ect. The same goes for his television shows. Where as the cosby show worked very hard to steer away from that archetype house of payne panders to the lowest common demoninator.

"I was attacked by a coked up whore and a crazy dentist!"

I know what a minstrel show is. I just wanted him to tell me because every time I ask someone to go into detail about why I shouldn't watch a Tyler Perry production, they never give me a response. To be honest, those stereotypes are true in most races. My grandmother and aunts act like Madea so it is not a stereotype. House of Payne is actually a good show. Meet the Browns was good too but sometimes it was cringe inducing.

Perhaps you should check your facts about other Blacks (producers, writers and directors) who have made and are making movies in Hollywood and then post to the board. I also submit that if you don't want to watch Tyler's movies, don't watch them. We are all free to make choices of what we want to watch and no one is twisting your arm to watch any of Tyler's movies. I believe that one of the best movies ever made was "The Godfather," but not once did I ever believe that the movie was indicative of how all Italians behaved. No one ever called "The Three Stooges" or "I Love Lucy" buffoonery, and yet these two shows were very successful back in the day. What you may find insulting may be pure entertainment to the rest of us.

I think you just brought up one of the best points that I have ever read on this site. I have my issues with Tyler Perry and too many times I have found myself not enjoying his movies, though I like his plays. But your point honestly made me stop and think, as it should others. Kudos!

I so agree with the person who posted this. I find Tyler Perry VERY offensive and definitely a negative stereotype. As a black male I find it disgraceful in 2012 for a black man to be betraying a woman. Also I am sick and tried of black people making nothing but black comedies.

I was shocked when I saw Star Trek (the 2009 movie) and saw Perry playing a serious role. I was so surpised and pleased. I wish for once he would do another type of film, sci fi, horror, etc.. instead of these offensive, demeaning comedies.

And we as black people have no one to blame but ourselves for these types of movies being made, as so many of us support them. I for one am not one of them.

reply

Well good for you because Tyler Perry is doing a serious role in I, Alex Cross this year and is working on a sci-fi film.

As for the Madea films, I support them because they entertain me. Comedies are what really make people show up the movies compared to most genres anyway. What exactly is wrong with Tyler Perry's movies and what stereotypes are you talking about?

reply

After reading your post, I have read about the two upcoming TP films you mentioned and am very glad to see that. I will see both.

As for comedies being the reason people go to the movies, I tend to disagree. The top 25 top grossing movies of all time: http://www.infoplease.com/ipea/A0150077.html, few, if any, are stictly comedies.

The stereotypes have been mentioned here and in other posts. And his Madea movies along with his television shows just feed into the negative stereotypes.

Great post, barravp. I don't know how a comedy should play out in the OP's eyes, but I'm guessing they should be more like dramas. I'm guessing he/she has nothing against "There's Something About Mary." Which is a very funny film by the way.

Clark's destiny = Superman, Lex Luthor & Lois Lane.

How many people including whites have a Madea in their family?

reply

Everyone! I've had a lot of white people say this too.
