After their expensive English education, a pair of glamorous twins from a wealthy family return home to Nigeria where the two women make very different choices. One shocks her family by going to live with her lover, the "revolutionary professor," and his devoted houseboy in the dusty university town of Nsukka, while the other turns out to be a fiercely successful businesswoman and takes over the family interests before falling in love with an English writer. The events of their lives seem to loom larger than politics, though they soon become caught up in the events of the Nigerian civil war in which the people fought an impassioned struggle to establish Biafra as an independent republic, ending in chilling violence that shocked the entire world.
