Hope Thandie is not official

And here we go again, casting American actresses to play an African character. Though I am elated that Chiwetel Ejiofor will be casted, I'm disappointed that a film that is not only based in Nigeria and written by a Nigerian is not willing to cast Nigerian actresses. I like Thandie Newton, I do, but I think it is highly unlikely she'll be able to pull off this character. There are very talented Nigerian born actresses, as well as British-Nigerians, who are well equipped to portray the character. Why not give unknown minority actresses a chance?

I'm pretty sure Thandie is English. <checks IMDB info> yep, she is. But I don't think she is British-Nigerian <checks IMDB info again>, nope BUT she is British-Zimbabwean. But who cares as long as they can act? She can act, however, looking at the films she's been in last few years, it's likely this is going to be sub-par. She is awful picking scripts. It's almost a talent - If Thandie Newton is in it, then is must be bad. Possibly one of the most beautiful actresses out there and she's in some barely watchable movies. What a waste.

I think she be good good, she seems kind of how I think Olanna would be, and she has the glamour to capture audience interest. Chiewetel Ejiofor and John Boyega are great choices too.

I think Kainene is the most interesting role, I hope they make her a big part of the movie. Maybe Sophie Okonedo would be good? It should be a big star, because the story is not an easy sell. I think people would enjoy it, but they need to be given the opportunity to go.

I don't really care who plays Richard, that character is not going to translate cinematically, he is really just in the book to tell Kainene's story without giving her a narrative voice.

WE NEED HER 2 ATTRACT D INTERNATIONAL CROWD. NIGERIANS ARE NOT SHOWING HER LOVE AT ALL AND I'M SO DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!! NEWTON WAS AMAZING IN GOOD DEEDS ETC....DIS WILL B GREAT PUBLICITY 4 NNAJI!!! STOP BEING SO PESSIMISTIC

I like Thandie Newton, but I don't think she looks like Olanna; she's too skinny and light. Olanna is supposed to be full-figured, and probably darker-skinned.

When I was reading the novel, I pictured Olanna looking somewhat like Adichie herself (who I think is a stunningly beautiful woman), but with a rounder face and fuller figure.

Agreed.

"Oh, Britta's in this?"

Nothing against Thandie but I agree.

So you would rather someone with less talent and recognition do the film so that it can flop? Using your logic, why not put Tyler Perry in another dress and let him play the role of Olanna? He is dark and can play full-figured, right?

Thandie is an exceptional actress who has proven that she can be versatile and depended upon to get the job done. People need to get over that she is too light or too thin for the role. I never hear white people complain about their own not looking the part. Get over yourselves. Better yet, if you disagree with the casting decision, stay home and sulk about it some more.

Why do you assume that they will be less talented? I find that an interesting assertion. Sounds like you are saying that there is no darker skin actresses that would be as good as Thandie, which I know can't be the case, because.. you know, logic. Have you auditioned Nigerian actresses to say that they can't act?

Personally, I am confused about how twins are born with one of them being biracial, and the other not. I like Thandie Newton, but Olanna is a Nigerian woman. Not a half/british white, half black/Zimbabwean woman. She's not biracial, and Thandie is clearly (visually) biracial. I also think about how Olanna is described in the book as being this stunning beauty, so it would have been nice if a stunningly beautiful dark skin, black woman (from whereever), would have been cast to portray her. Seriously, I wonder if they are still going to be twins in the film, because although I know that twins aren't always identical, they usually both look like they came from the same parents. I am generally always disappointed with movie adaptations of books I've read, but before even seeing a trailer I am already disappointed.

A big name like her was necessary for financing.

totally agree with the OP. it's very disappointing

she'a a known actress, but a "big name"? i really don't think so.

Zimbabwe is in South Africa.

it's in the south of africa, but not in south africa. if you write "she's from south africa", you make it sound like she's from the country south africa.

For maximum audience interest, I imagine. You'd think studios would've learnt from The Last Airbender and Prince of Persia

We'll see if this is another d'oh, though.
