That's why I didn't want to watch this movie. But then I read the reviews with people hyping it up. There is no way, I mean no way, I could ever feel ANYTHING for that looney tune. I can't believe Lifetime tried to make us feel sympathetic by continually talking about her 3 miscarriages. I about turned my TV off during the prison scene when she told Joy something like, "Look, you had 3 kids. I couldn't have none!" Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Carlina say that Ann has a son now? So really she was just being impatient. She was not infertile. She eventually had her own kid, unless she stole that one, too. Maybe the boy should run a background check on himself. If I was Joy, I'd probably be doing time with Ann behind bars because I would have jumped across the table and rung her neck out. I can't say anymore. I have to abide by IMDB's terms and conditions. smh

Put yourself in Netty's shoes.
The only lady you have known as Mom, the 1 who taught you to walk, talk, changed your diapers, told you about sex, took you to school,fed and clothes you and all that...you'd turn on her immediately. Of course Netty is super pissed @ Ann, but Ann is the only mother she has ever known. & if she did/does cut off Ann, fine. The rest of teh Pettways family had no idea Ann stole Carlina so why should Netty leave them?

I dont think Lifetime was trying to force us to have sympathy for Ann. She DID have 3 miscarriages. It wasnt in 97 that she had a son. I dont think it was that she was impatient, she was on cocaine so I think the cocaine may ahve contributed to the miscarriages.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact it doesn't matter whether she was impatient or not, as far as having a child of her own was concerned--she still stole someone else's baby. There is absolutely no excuse for that. It's too bad if you can't have your own.

Clearly, she's an unstable woman all the way around if she can make excuses like that, provided it's what really happened. Other people aren't responsible for those who have miscarraiges, or lose babies. I'm sorry for them, but you don't get to take someone else's child.

It was no excuse to steal someone's child because you lost yours but for the poster to "too bad that you cannot have your own" is just as heartless. I have had 2 miscarriages and 1 stillborne then after finally having our daughter we lost her too from a car accident. No , I never had a second thot to steal someone else.s child but after losing so many I did have a first thot. Because I am not insane I listened to my after thot which is what most who are afflicted this way do. I put in for adoption.....Unless you have gone through that stroke of bad luck you can't even imagine her desperation . Where she went wrong was she gave into that desperation and did a heartless act. Put her motherless ache on another mother. Don't get me wrong I think what she did was horrible not just to Joy & Carl but to Carlina but in her defense she was not in her right mind. Unless you have been in her shoes you cannot possibly understand enough to say "too bad you can't have your own"
Show some compassion.
And no I think she should get justly 23 years prison time for the time she stole from 3 innocent lives!
So don't twist the meaning of what I said around in order to defend yourself in your heartless statement.

Ann should've gotten a life sentence! Maybe parole her after 40 years but 12 years is a joke!

I had always wanted children but unfortunately I ended up being diagnosed with an illness and had to have a full hysterectomy at the age of 25, before I had the chance to have children of my own. I went through years of a deep depression. Not only did I have a chemical imbalance due to artificial menopause and the lack of hormones that my body could produce but while most of my friends were on baby number 2 and enjoying motherhood, I had to come to terms with the fact that I would never have that experience, no matter how badly I wanted it. However, as depressed as I was, never did I even entertain the thought of stealing someone else's child and causing them to suffer even more pain than I had. That is an extremely selfish thing to do to a couple or a parent and their child. Regardless of how unfortunate her situation was, there is absolutely no excuse for what Ann Pettway did to this family. No excuse.

EXACTLY! A lot of people can't have children and while it's not fair they don't go and steal someone else's child. To bad so sad, sometimes life isn't fair!

I couldn't stand the movie showing the trial and how they tried to make it like she was just depressed over not being able to have a child of her own. TOO F'KING BAD!

I loved the line where Joy said to her in prison "it's all I can do to not jump over this table and kill you". Honestly I was wishing she would have.

There is no excuse and Ann should have received a minimum 69 year sentence. 23 years for Joy, Carl and Carlina. She didn't steal 23 years from one person.... she stole them from 3.

Ann Pettway is a monster and I hope she dies in prison!

Actually, she can. They are her parents, so how about, because of Netty, they put they need, however justified, for revenge aside and think first of how that would affect their daughter.

Chaniboo, I think you're misinterpreting what you saw. I saw no intent to make Ann a sympathetic character. She came off in the movie the way she really was: unstable, as you say. I doubt she was ever tightly wrapped, but I imagine her mental state deteriorated significantly after the three failed pregnancies and probably the post-partem depression a mother frequently has after having a baby. It might even have been a post-partem psychosis, which can make a woman delusional, or even dangerous (Andrea Yates, for example). This is no way making excuses for her or showing her sympathy. I think it's just a way to help the viewer understand what happened. It's part of the story. The scene with Joy talking to Ann was not to get sympathy for Ann. I see it as a very true-to-life portrayal of how a person in a severely compromised mental state looks at her crimes. In their confused minds, they have a way to justify their criminal acts--but only to themselves; no one else buys it. I didn't feel sympathy for Ann in that scene; I felt horror, shock and repugnance (sickened). I felt a sense of outrage on Joy's behalf. I can only imagine how hearing all that twisted logic made Joy feel. "You should thank me." Seriously? How disconnected from reality. This is someone with a serious personality disorder. I think Joy probably went there in search of closure, which is truly sad because there was no way she was ever going to find that. Certainly not from that twisted sister!

The sympathy in the movie was all for Joy, Carl and Carlina/Netty. I never felt it directed anywhere else. Those were the three victims of this crime; they and all those who loved them.

lashekas, what movie were you wathcing?
They DEF didnt make Ann out to be a good mother.
From how she was acting she seemed like she was bipolar or manic depressive or a drug abuser. the 'beyond teh headlines' after the movie indeed showed she was on cocaine from 83-05(she's lucky she aint die, thats a 22yr addiction).

I see nothing bad about the Pettaway family. They had no idea that Ann stole Carlina. And over the years when Ann was on drugs or in jail they stepped in adn raised Netty.

Ann got 12yrs as a plea bargin to avoid a trial(waste of NY tax payers' $).
If she didnt get a plea bargain you know she woulda plead insanity and there is more than enough evidence to support her mental instabilty. Why are the Pettways trash? We didnt see any of them! Or aer you talking about 'Beyond The Headlines' bc if so we cant help out we look, and I thnk they look fine.

YOU arent making sense! You say bc Netty is confused she doesnt deserve teh $. she most certainly does. She is only getting 1 year of free therapy then she is on her own, with a daughter and her brother to raise. That $424,000 would have helped Netty and Samamni out but instead joy/carl wasted it. How they spent $424,000 in 2.5years is beyond me1 They didnt buy a house bc Joy is living inan apt bldg in (posters here say that is the govt housing/projects). I hope they didnt blow it all on NJ casinos. We know for damn sure they didnt use it to start a website or a 1800 hotline or national ads for Carlina.

Adnd they're mad bc she goes by Netty? That is who she knows herself as.
they're mad bc she wont move to NY? Why do that? her job, support, Samani's school are in GA. If joy/carl care so much why dont THEY move to GA to get to know their daughter naf granddaughter.

If they hadn't blown through the $424,000 stupidly( i say stupidly bc joy is vague about what she spend the 4 on. If it was for college tution or to buy a house she;d willingsly tell that) they would be money for everyone to fly back and forth from GA-NY on the weekends .

I support Netty staying in Ga with her job, her daughter, and her Aunt Cassi.

It was their money. They saved it until she was 21, if she wasn't found then, they could spend it on what ever they wanted to spend it on. They don't owe anyone any explanation regarding the money. Are you the Pettways, you sure are taking this personally? You have an opinion just as I have mine. I say they are trash the way they excuse Ann's behavior and I stand by what I believe. Wrong is wrong regardless of who commits the crime and people need to stop making excuses just because it's a relative.

What difference would it make if Netty received the money? None! She needs more then money because of what Ann did to her.

I truly understand Netty's conflict, with her biological parents especially Joy treating her like a baby. Joy needs to realize that Netty has to adjust and take everything in.

Bottom line Ann definately destroyed 3 people lives Netty, Joy & Carl's not counting others.

I agree with Lashekas the movie portrayed Ann as having 3 miscarriages, she needs s'body to love her and all that crap, she appeared more as a sympathetic figure than a creepy drug addict who snatched s'body's child. This lady was a terror.

Also I totally understand that Joy/Carl needed this money after 21 years. Imagine all they had already spent looking for Carlina (especially during the early years when Carlina first went missing). Also 2 addt'l kids each for the two of them. After 21 years they probably gave up and thought they werent ever gonna find her.

Also can you imagine the emotional strife you go through when somebody takes your child. You find the child or she finds you and right after she stops talking to you all over money. That's crazy. Those people went through hell and back for her. if they could turn back time those parents I'm sure would much rather have their child to raise themselves than $375,000.

after 21 what did joy/carl need the $ for?
& what do they have to show for it since JOY IS STILL LIVING IN THE PROJECTS?
how did they spend 424,000 is just 2.5 years?
joy/carl DIDNT spend $ looking for carlina.
joy said she made phone calls to the detective and that is it.

Netty didnt stop talking to joy/carljust over the $.
Netty doesnt understand why they gave up looking after 21 years.
Netty is upset that they wanted ann to go to jail for life, which would cause her brother to loose his mother just like they(joy/carl) lost carlina.
Netty is upset they wanted her to cut off all the pettaways and move to NY.

Lilunta3, I see your point about the money and I would agree with you, if the money was awarded to Carlina.

The money was awarded to Joy and Carl for the negligence, pain and suffering caused. Out of the goodness of there hearts however, they set up this fund for there stolen child in hopes that she would be found and the fund would be available to her by the time she turns 21. But she wasn't found by then and they didn't know and were probably discouraged as to whether she would ever be found.

Did they tell her they'd stopped looking for her after 21 or is this an assumption?

Also this woman Ann is very lucky. 12 years is nothing for committing a crime like that. Its understandable for them to want her to do more time. Netty can't expect Joy/Carl to now have sympathy for the son whose now abandoned as a result of Ann stealing a baby that didn't belong to her! She didn't give a *beep* about them when she took their baby and sentenced them to 23 years of heartache, worry and pain!

Also once she's out of prison, whose to say she won't do something stupid like that again or something stupid period. My heart goes out to her son but you have to think about the consequences of your actions and the people who could possibly be affected by them - before you do them.

the money was for the pain and sufferong of carl/jot not having their daughter and for carlina not having her parents.

what if carlina was found and needed extensive therapy or a costly surgery? yet they blew all that m$ and are still living in the projcts!

when ann gets out she will be monitored. plus she has her son anyways so no she isnt gonna steal anyone's child.
