HOW the hell could Carlina speak to her abductor??

She kiidnapped her life from her yet she visits her in jail?? WTF?

Undoubtedly, there were still some strong familial ties. This woman did raise her and she DID think of her as her "mother" for almost 23 years. That cannot be erased...the emotions are still there. No matter how much anger she might have for what her "mother" did to her. She may have been able to finally forgive her and that's why she visited her in jail. Another thing is that Ann did also help raise Carlina's daughter and considered her a granddaughter. They were close. That doesn't just go away, either. There is a bond there.

Yes, it's jacked up but life does go on.

yeah I'm pretty confused why so many people donn't understand why Netty would have feelings for Ann still. Like you (viamber) said. For all that Netty can remember, she IS her mother. To these people who are mad at the daughter for hurting her real parents by not 100% hating Ann... I don't get that.

To those confused, imagine your childhood, living your life, with your mom, etc. Like we all do. Then one day, you find out -- just kidding! She's not really your mom! It's some random lady in another state whom you know nothing about! Is it really logical to expect her feelings to just automatically ditch everything they'd known her whole life, and just leap with total bond and warmth to a virtual stranger? That would seem weirder to me.

I think the movie did well showing her being just very mixed up and not knowing what to feel. She definitely felt betrayed and anger at Ann...but at the same time...again. You can't just press a delete button on your whole childhood and suddenly conjure up totally mother-daughter feelings to a stranger just b/c your birth certificate says they are your mother.

Joy in the movie explains well...how Carlina had always been a part of her life, every day, even when she was missing. So to her, she was always her daughter...her daughter that was stolen. But to Netty, she didn't even know a "real mom" existed out there, and thought the other one was her real mom.

Now I'm not saying the real PARENTS should sympathize or be kind toward Ann lol. Just, it makes total sense for Netty to act how she did, I think. I'm not defending Ann at all, either -- what she did was obviously wrong. But I am defending Netty...

That is a good point, but very disturbing. Its sad when Netty daughter was calling that crazy woman "grandmother" I was like "wow"....but that is the only grandmother that little girl know which is just sad.

I liked the prison scene where Ann plays the 'touch-hands' game with her 'granddaughter' on the window pane on the prison visit. I actually felt some sympathy for Ann in that sequence. She does show love and a sense of fun for the young girl.
