This movie would have more sense if...
RJ had something in his past that made him act the way he did. From what is shown in the movie, he didn't have a whole lot to complain about -- he had fame, money, supportive parents, family/friends, producers etc. so where is his angst coming from that made him an alcoholic? It would have made sense if they had shown him having a superficial relationship with an innocent female fan who later commits suicide after feeling betrayed by him. Then his behavior would make sense, that he is self-destroying out of guilt or something.
