Strangely, I both liked and was creeped out by his having Ben call him "sir" like that. I liked it because of the respect it entails, but disliked it because, well, that's just too much, y'know?

Wasn't he starting with some treking business taking tourists out on his land for little wilderness trips ? What with that and beginning to build a cattle herd maybe he's got too much on his plate this year to have the crew follow him in his day-to-day.
As for calling the guy a creep...WTF? Kyle seems to be a very loving father and is giving his son a fantastic upbringing, even if a little old fashioned. The 'sir' thing may be lost to many now but what with the remote lifestyle maybe Kyle is simply carrying on where he left off with his own father and grandfather. He seems to treat his boy with plenty of respect too.
