I was hoping the movie would end where he comes out of an alleyway and gets his revenge for the lost fare, killing both son and father. After doing so, the subway guy tears his shirt off then howls at the moon, proclaiming "THE PROPHESY HAS BEEN FULFILLED!!!"

I think he's the same character from Better off Dead - the paperboy who wants his two dollars.
