Decent first feature but lacks clarity

I just watched the film. For the first half of it I thought coldwater was a private rehab centre where parents sent their troubled kids. I assumed the new dad convinced the mum it was the right thing to do and they decided to enroll him at the camp (at this point we don't know that his gf was killed). Why else would he shout to his mum, "please don't do this!" and then show her looking all guilty?

But then the cops have to take him back to the camp like it's some kinda court order? What the *beep* is that? There were slight hints that the cop was in the guys pocket but nothing was ever confirmed, so I assume he really did have to take the kid back? Why? If it's a voluntary program the parents are paying for then wtf? Why wouldn't the cops believe his story and get him the *beep* home?

That really took me out of the film, not understanding what the place was and why kids are sent there.

Well said. I could not agree with you more.

When he escaped, the authorities should have contacted his parent(s) in addition to the facility. Especially if the boy insisted his mom be called. I had a similar experience when I escaped math camp.

Unveiling my first ever signature... Now where did I set my drink?

What happened when you escaped math camp?

that bugged me too. plus the police don't need proof to investigate reports of abuse. that made no sense at all. like if i called 911 and say someone is trying to kill me, they be like "sorry sir, other than your testimony you have no proof that someone is trying to kill you, call us back when you got something"

that's just not how the world works
