This show was doomed from the start because...

of the title.

In my opinion, "cornbread fed, middle america, with their wholesome christian values and nielson boxes" are not going to tune into a show like this, because of self loathing. I also believe that is why Don't Trust The Bitch In Apartment 23 also failed to develop an audience.

Only problem? No. However, the title was such a bad marketing point. Shows like this, can only run with free reign on HBO/SHOTIME/A&E not network television.

Kevin Bacon's new show, The Following is pretty dark. However, it has smart marketing and 'star power intrigue' that this show just never had.

I think, if they had just called it The Avenue or something equally as mundane, it would have (at the very least) gained an initial audience.

reply

I can agree with that. There were groups (One Million Moms) who were out to get this show before it ever aired. And people refused to even see it, because of the "title".

Judging a book by it's cover. Classic case of missing a lot of good things in life.

reply

I think having a show named after the call sign of the devil can sure be a disadvantage for the show.

reply

Possibly but honestly the title is what made teh show stand out and me to notice it and tune in in the first place. So it's a two fold issue. And groups like One Million Moms would have been all over the show anyway. They will trash a show for the commercials played during it if they can't find something in the episode itself.

reply

Absolutely. Anyone with even a basic college Business 101 class under their belt knows that the title is going to cause problems, and you simply don't do that when marketing a show. It's called a "SWOT/PEST" analysis.

It's like opening a restaurant that serves bacon or ham in a Muslim or Jewish neighborhood.

reply

I don't think the title had much to do with it falling, it is more of the same old story with a clueless boyfriend/fiance/husband and a gal who falls for the seemingly nicer guy. Nothing new

reply

The problem is ABC didn't give it a chance.

reply

You make it sound like only "christian values" people have nielson boxes. Yeah right!

Racist Game = Pool. WHITE ball push COLORED balls back into holes. BLACK ball out = you win.

reply

No, I don't agree with this.

The main problem with the show was that it didn't start finding it's footing until about five or six episodes in and by that time anyone who was interested in the original concept had tuned out. Sadly, most people barely gives a show one chance, much less two.

reply

I didn't expect anything from this show, but I was actually hooked from episode 1! Great series :)

I think they should've called it The Drake.

reply

It was doomed because of it's slow moving pace, boring plot, bad writing and horrible acting. I knew after watching the second episode that it'd be canceled before the end of the year (still gave it a chance until the fourth episode). It tried to be gripping like American Horror Story but it did nothing to leave you in anticipation until the next episode. I don't think anything happened in the four episodes I watched of any significance.

reply

It was doomed from the start because it is a obvious ripoff of Devil's Advocate with very little new to add. Christians didn't avoid it because of the title; people watched the COMMERCIAL and had it all figured out. Calling it 'the Drake' would have been smart but it wouldn't be enough. They would have had to be amazingly written so that word of mouth could build: "Really, I know it seems silly and hackneyed as a concept but X character is SO funny and Y character is really interesting and Z is such a great actor."

5 minutes in and you know people sell their souls and it works badly - but that isn't enough to fill a 30 minutes Twilight Zone-esque show.

Oh knock it off with the Devil's Advocate's comparisons already!

Explain how it is similar to Devil's Advocate?

I just started watching this show and all I am getting is that the writers are inspired by Supernatural. The deals, the ten years before the demons collect the soul, and the black smoke, lights flickering indicating the presence of a spirit. I'm just waiting for Sam and Dean to show up and start an investigation on the drake. They could trap Gavin in one of their pentagram things and send his ass back to hell!

reply

Supernatural is most definitely not the guys who thought up 10 year deals, haha. That's a pretty old concept.

Then you definitely, most certainly were not paying attention.

I don't get how people insist this show is "slow". It's not slow-paced at all. Moreso than American Horror Story but that works in its favor, since it's trying to be a supernatural mystery and NOT an all-in-your-face freakshow like AHS.

Totally agree with you--each episode definitely had me looking forward to the next one, and I rewatched most of them so I could fully appreciate things I might've missed or glossed over during the first viewing. Not slow at all.

American Horror Story...I saw the trailer for that and thought it looked terrible so I never bothered to even check it out and I like the horror genre it just came across as a trashy soapie teen drama B grade looking show I guess I could check it out though now that 666 is done for.

I actually love the actors and actresses in 666 and think they do a great job, that's why I was surprised to hear it was cancelled because the cast is amazing. I don't think slow paced is the right way to describe this show, it's not a slasher show full of action, sure. However there is still a lot of mysteries waiting to be unraveled, there's no shortage of death, betrayal, twists and schemes. I enjoy watching this show and find it to be like a book that's pulled you in and you can't put it down because it's just that good. If I was rich I would pay to keep it on air lol sorry guys :c

I am watching in the UK, I knew the show was doomed when they started saying recently 'Watch 666 Park Avenue before the US' Yep! if we are getting it before the Americans I knew for certain that it has been cancelled.

Anyway, it did lag a bit in the middle but seems to have started to pick up now, pity it couldn't have kept up this pace all along as it might have saved it.

I am also a little peeved that casting directors still cannot understand the fundamentals of genetics....BLUE EYES ARE RECESSIVE...dumbass!

If you love Satan and are 100% proud of it copy this and make your signature!

reply

It has been shown that Blue eye colour being a recessive gene is incorrect, eye colour is a lot more complex than it was once thought to be

I was reallu looking forward this show, I lover Buffy, Supernatural, Walking Dead etc. I am really disapointed with it. I'm starting to question whether it's meant to be scary or not.

reply

I doubt the title scared many people away. By that Logic, Dante's Inferno would have been a flop. And what about the success of movie's like the Devil's Advocate(which has already been mentioned in this thread for various reasons
If you actually watch the show, it doesn't make the devil look like a good guy.
It's not a stupid title like "Christian Bitches" or whatever that one show was initially called. If they had called it "The Avenue", people might have tuned in expecting Melrose Place and been quickly turned off anyway. And giving it such a vague name can backfire. If you just saw the title "John Carter" in a list a movies, you'd probably have no idea it was about a guy going to Mars(which was problem with the film's marketing). Why did this show get canceled? Maybe because it was trying to be the umpteenth Lost clone? I liked it, but apparently not many people did.

reply

The title did make me uncomfortable. But I still watched and loved it. The shiw was really starting to find its groove when it was cancelled. Loouking forward to the final eps.
