IMO, the worst movie ever... Let me elaborate.

I don't write a lot here, as I believe there are much smarter and more eloquent people who can give better reviews of the movies. But I felt compelled after watching this catastrophy of a movie. I can see why it is so popular - it ticks all the boxes with the dialogues and the situations characters are put in, for a romantic movie. Problem is, they all seem like they are shoved down your throat, with no subtlety, or even intelligence. I could not believe that the director, or the actors for that fact, thought that what they were doing would look and sound good, and believable, for us viewers. Male lead - totally miscast. He looks like a 16 year old kid, and there was absolutely no chemistry whatsoever between him and R. McAdams at any point of the movie. Everything seemed so rushed, out of place, not one situation seemed natural. R. McAdams seemed so plastic, usually I like her in such movies (I've seen the Notebook and the Vow, and I watch many of the movies like this, so it's not like I hate the genre). It seemed like she was trying so much to be this likable, innocent, a bit goofy girl, with a big smile, "look at me, I'm so nice and everybody should like me", that it was extremely irritating and not natural at all. I honestly doubt that she can really act, outside of movies like this. It seems like she is not even trying any more. The situations they went through, the proposal, all the efforts from the guy, it all seemed so rushed and again, not natural, with no chemistry, that it seemed like a generic movie with no soul, like they wanted to put great locations, dialogues that just seemed smart and actors that all would like, and mix it up in this horrible, horrible mix that should be a movie. It's like some music these days - generic, like being made by a computer algorithm in which you put some characteristics in and then you have a new hit that masses will like, and it will top the charts for couple of weeks, and then it will dissapear forever. Terrible, just terrible. And why I say it's the worst ever? Of course, there are many who could fit that description. But since they had a huge budget for this, it is an embarrasment with what they came up with. The director, the writer(s), and the actors. So here are my two cents on the movie, hope I don't get bashed too much but it is my opinion, and if you don't like it, hey, were all entitled to have one. Cheers.

A few paragraphs could help. Maybe.

I wouldn't have read it all even if it had paragraphs...lol.

reply

I'd have read this if there were paragraphs. Talk about an assault on the eyes/brain.

reply

Ignoring the twitter generation rants above and saying that while I do not think this is the worst movie ever, I agree on everything else you wrote.

reply

What does Twitter have to do with separating a wall of text with paragraphs?

reply

Did you not know that in ancient Pre-Twitterian times, humans had not yet invented the paragraph? Due to the reality of constant warfare (particularly between the Google Empire and the Facebookian Horde), early forum posts were all protected by walls of text.

Yeah the worse movie ever until the next movie you don't enjoy comes along. That worse movie ever line gets thrown around way to much now days.

reply

Agreed fred1239. Every other movie is "the worst movie ever". They probably need a English dictionary.
These are the same 'kind' of people who would rate movies 1/10..to compensate for which, some others who thought its "the best movie ever" would rate it 10/10 = As a result of which, IMDB rating system has gone to dogs.

reply

I compared this to the notebook a lot throughout and though I do not rate as good it comes close. Let me elaborate :)
Just like you I had trouble believing in the chemistry between the two main characters. At first I thought the meeting in the dark was to illustrate the mismatch in physical looks, and when I found out it wasn't I was disappointed because: come on who could beleive in those two together...
I do believe this was done fully intentioanlly. The mismatch between the two illustrated early on forced the viewer to slowly look for "something else" in the film (which makes it stand out from many in its genre) - perhaps something deeper.
I don't think my opinion of a main character has changed so much throughout a film before. From being annoyed by the guy at the beginning to crying my eyes out when he says goodbye to his dad. The relationship between father and son was also the most touching in this film. For once I actually found McAdams average (though I always enjoy her!)

I agree with everything you said but there are two things I don't understand:

1. Why the OP feels the need to throw a fit just cause a movie wasn't specifically to his/her liking;
2. Why does everyone find The Notebook to be such a great movie. Personally I thought this one was much better. But well, it's probably a matter of taste.

Same. This movie, while not exactly groundbreaking, was heartwarming in its treatment of familial relationships. In fact, I consider this less of a romantic movie and more a family and interpersonal bonds kind of movie (similar in vein to say Guilt Trip, People Like Us, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Lars and the Real Girl or City Island).

While Tim courting Mary was given significant time early in the movie, in the rest of the movie, Mary is Tim's wife. Not anymore just a romantic interest, but family.

If it's the "worst movie ever" that the OP has seen then maybe they haven't seen enough movies. My own really really bad movie list can fill a page at least.

And yes, I too find it puzzling how people set The Notebook as the paradigm for romantic movies. It was decent, but it's way overhyped IMO. But yeah, different tastes I guess.

Huh, I didn't even realise that. You're right, most romantic movies lead up to them "going steady" or something. The romance is the centre of the whole plot. In this one, however, the romance was wrapped up pretty soon. It was more of a family movie than anything.

reply

No. NO no. Remember when his father asked him what he wanted to do with his gift? After some thought, Tim said love. The first half of the movie, courting Mary, is his adolescence of learning about love. He soon learns love encompasses much more than the person of our dreams. He learns that it also includes family, friends, but most importantly.... his third rule. The movie is about the depth of love.

I agree as well. I liked that.

For starters, you disliking a movie doesn't make it "the worst movie ever" (holy hyperbole, Batman!) or even bad. It makes it a movie you can't relate to.
Believe it or not, you are not the be-all and end-all of human experience, emotion and perspective. The budget has very little importance in the overall experience.

Second, if you have truly watched the whole movie (which I do not believe), and you still think it's a romantic comedy, you have totally and utterly missed the point.

Third, you actually mentioned The Notebook so your opinion is now invalid.

Have a good life. I'd wish you to get better at it but that would be a waste of time, really.

Agreed.

AGREED.
