The 'LA sound'

What I learned from the documentary that the LA sound was created by people who weren't even from California. The early artists were from the east coast and I think Timothy is the only Eagle actually from California. Also, I didn't know until Glenn died that he lived in NYC and had moved to Colorado after the group broke up. Did he ever live in California again? Since Don lives in Texas, I guess Timothy and Joe are the only ones who live in California. I am assuming Joe lives there. Does anyone know?

Actually this sort of thing has happened often throughout R-n-R history. The Memphis sound of the 1950s came entirely from artists who were not originally from Memphis (Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.). Same with the San Francisco sound of the late '60s. Up-and-coming artists will often migrate to where the music scene is happening at that particular time and come together to create something special...such was the case with LA in the early '70s.

Yeah Timothy B was the only Californian in the band - came in only on the Long Run. Also remember the many people who were part of the "Seattle Sound" of the 90's, but were not from there.

I thought that was called grunge. I guess being from the area is not a criterion, but moving after you become famous for that area is a little cold. However, I just read he still had a home in LA and HI, but he lived in NYC. He and his family were in HI when he got ill.

Don Henley is from Texas, Glenn Frey was from Detroit and Randy Meisner is from Nebraska--certainly not "east coast". Both Bernie Leadon and Don Felder are from Gainesville Florida, and their influences were southern rock and country, not "east coast". FYI.

I never said any of the Eagles were from the east coast. I meant the early LA sound was created by some east coast artists, like Carol King, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell (Canada), Stephen Stills (also knew Felder and Tom Petty from living in Gainesville), Neil Young (Also Florida by way of Canada). J. D. Souther ironically was born in Detroit and raised in Texas. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head who were from CA are David Crosby and Jackson Brown. I wasn't talking about the Eagles.

There is only 1 legitimate LA should and that is The Doors. Period. End of fucking story. The Eagles are a manufactured sop band designed for an ignorant, passionless audience who wanted the “mellow” sound of the era.
