Whats Ridley's first cut ? Theatrical or extended?

He says on the commentary "When you're in the editing room, the dangerous thing is that it becomes like telling a joke again and again and again. Eventually the joke starts to not be funny. So you have to be careful that you're not throwing the baby out with the bath water."

So I guess he did the extended cut the first time, then he kept watching it and watching it and ended up cutting too much of it for the theatrical release ?

That's usually how it goes, the studio is pushing you and pushing you to not pass the 2 hour mark so you end up cutting out a little too much... and then the studio realises their mistake and adds some scenes back.

There were a couple scenes in the extended I really dug, especially the dog food joke which was for me one of the best scenes of the movie but there also was alot of blabbering, the initial bedscene going on forever and the jeweler getting waaaaaaay too philosophical for 3 minutes.

Death to mainstream cinema!
