Other crime films that really pack a punch like this one, and expose the harsh nature of man-kind?

reply

Oliver Stone film, drug dealer porn. See the good life of drug dealers and the wages of their sins, along with ridiculous conceit that they were really environmental warriors, as idiotic and as violent as it gets.

There are lots of similar films depending on what you want to be similar. I don't think The Counselor is about "the harsh nature of man-kind." It is about the harsh nature of the Cartel, and Malkina but it also showed the love of Counselor and Laura, Malkina for the cats, Reiner and Westray harmless and friendly to Counselor in the scenes shown.

Snatch, Two Smoking Barrels, Blood on Concrete, Scarface....pull up any list of crime films and the similarities to whatever are there.

Savages. Good film. NOT about the harsh nature of man-kind but rather just the opposite. The Ca Dope Growers were all good friends willing to sacrifice themselves and money for each other. Also of note: nice come back for the all powerful Cartel who ran into a little group who didn't take their *beep* Hollywood of course, but still fun.

Hollywood. Can you be a "nice" drug dealer?.......and stay in business. Let other drug dealers take over your business as long as they don't kidnap your gf? And why no snuff film in Savages? BECAUSE: hostages are taken NOT to make snuff films but to get something from someone else. THEN you can snuff, if you got some.

The obvious analog is "No Country for Old Men" which has the same tenor most probably because it was written by the same guy. Both movies have the same morally ambiguous feel and have many flawed characters played by well respected actors.

So..... what was the original question..............."Other crime films that really pack a punch like this one, and expose the harsh nature of man-kind?"

No Country compared to Counselor:

Crime film==check
Pack a Punch==check
Harsh Nature of Mankind?==debateable, a question of degree, and I disagreed with the premise even though its mostly correct.

No country is "about" a psychotic killer after some money.

Counselor is "about" a man trapped in a situation he can't get out of.

There are lots of similar films depending on what you want to be similar.

reply

No Country is also about a man trapped in something he can't get out of

reply

Trapped. True. By their fates...which they bring on paradoxically by their own actions.

I would add Chinatown to No Country.

SAVAGES was the opposite of The Counselor...and not even worth taking the time to insult here.

Irreversible for me is similar, bad choices = bad results with suffering of the ones You loved.

reply

What? All Monica Bellucci did was left the part early. What the heck are you talking about? Irreversible is about how one violent act caused a chain reaction to ruin many people's lives.

When I saw The Counselor, one of my first thoughts was "this is the best film Sam Peckinpah never made."

If you liked this, I recommend Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia.

These two movies remind me of each other, and they both kill me.

reply

Great point; especially late Peckinpah I think!

reply

hmm, as harsh as this one? most disney films, probably.

Funny you mention Drive and No Country For Old Men, cos I always thought Ryan Gosling was kinda going for Chigurh with his character. I see similarities to certain scenes in how they were made too.
