Ideas on what the General was going to do at the cliffhanger?

I have none. Which is why I am not a writer.

But I am fascinated to know WHAT it could have been.

The default answer is that he's going back to kill Hitler.

However, I suspect what we would've discovered is that he was going back to undo something that had already happened - there was probably a program before this one and something went horribly wrong. Or maybe he knows about a Soviet program and has to go deal with their operative.

Someone should track down the writer and ask them to post a synopsis of their plan in the trivia section.

How did he know about the location/point in time that he dressed for and entered?

Could they predict when/where the timemachine would open a doorway to?

Did I miss something?

Martin:

Yes, the general feeling is that he knew exactly where he was going and they all did. It was understood given that the first troop also knew. Well, it only follows the premise that we saw.

First, I liked the pilot but feel things went way too smoothly without significant antagonism until the last 90-seconds which led us to the cliffhanger and the topic of this thread.
MY impression was the general somehow "undid" what was just changed and was going back to NYC in its nuclear winter. This would also explain why it became dark outside and why Shaun's call to Jessica cut-off; she died from the nuke that the general "restored."
Exactly HOW the general knew that the next window was going to to an apocalyptic NY is unknown at this point (presuming I'm correct that he was going back to NY AFTER the bomb detonated. I guess the writers had a lot planned (obviously enough for a first season).

That's my idea.....what about your guess?

Nuclear Winter is not a local city effect, it is a world-wide condition resulting from ash in the sky blocking sunlight around the entire planet.

In the movie it is clear he is walking into a snow-blown forest, not a destroyed city.

The Question Remains: How did he know the time and location of the next window? All the techs said they could not predict time/location and even duration was iffy.
