They faked their deaths so they could start over, and people wouldn't keep coming after them. Even though this whole thing was over, they'd thought that several times before, and someone else always targeted them again. They didn't want to go through it all again, but not telling their family and friends until later was pretty horrible.
Cat was studying for the LSAT in the pilot before her mom died, the test you have to take to get in to law school, so I don't think she actually attended at all. Maybe she attended for a little while before dropping out, depending on when she decided to become a cop, but I doubt she went through three full years of law school and graduated, only to change her mind at the very last minute before taking the BAR exam. She'd definitely have needed more than six months to finish school and learn French law. She'd have needed fake transcripts and all kinds of things before even attempting it, and like someone said above, as soon as it was discovered, all of her cases would be thrown out and she'd be under prosecution herself. Great way to launch your law career, geez.
The whole thing was pretty underwhelming to me, too. There wasn't even any kind of big fight or anything, and there were a lot of plot holes. Vincent just escaped from prison after a huge manhunt to arrest him in the first place, but nobody was looking for him anywhere? He hangs out at home or at JT's place, walks around uninhibited, and even takes Cat to some fancy restaurant for dinner while supposedly "on the run," and nobody bats an eye? Really? After all they went through to catch him initially, no one cares that he escaped? Kyle suddenly has a completely unexplained change of heart and wants to help, when he was the one who had them arrested in the first place just two episodes ago? The guardrails on the Queensboro Bridge are tall, concrete, and built to prevent cars from going over the edge. How did the car plow through it without so much as a scratch on the front end, or either of them getting seriously injured? Even minor crashes hurt. Heather's not only up and walking, but carrying heavy luggage, and running and jumping on Kyle, right after getting shot in the chest? Even from small calibers, chest wounds are big deals. They take longer than a few days to recover from. At this point, it'd take all of her energy just to walk from her bedroom to the bathroom and back again, but she's traipsing all over the city like nothing happened? In high heels, no less? Etc.
There was no tension or suspense in the episode at all. It was one of their weakest in a long time, and it's the series finale? Did any of them even care at all by this point? There were a few scenes and moments that I liked, but it was a pretty forgettable episode. They knew it was the last one two years ago, so why didn't they write the show to a more exciting ending?
