There's this saying about how a lot of people can't except change...

Everyone wants to see their favourite characters back... if that's to be so then with these characters comes more finely tuned skills & with time comes the invention of nastier nasties. Things change. We watched these characters grow up. Indulge & pity their journey. If you don't like find something else to play or replay the old games over & over. Live in past... with parachute pants & Cosby.

Either enjoy what you get or shut up.

Hey, some change is fine, but the foundations of the Resident Evil series were survival and horror. As long as those had been kept in mind, original fans would have been less angered than by the action-packed route the series has gone down. Mutilating character personalities didn't help either.

Remember this: if you change something too much, eventually only the name remains.

RE Revelations was just released this year and it's survival horror, with solving puzzel.even though, those puzzels were easy compared to the old games.the only difference the older games had Zombies and this one had new virus.
Leon's section in RE6 is survival horror with modern Zombies.
besides,Capcom said survival horror fans are SMALL compared to action fans like COD games.that's why RE is heading more to Action route.

Capcom sold out. This is surprising?

They could have made a new action series, but using the Resident Evil name to increase sales was too profitable a strategy to turn down.

By the way...there are still survival horror games being released, and people *are* starting to get sick of action masquerading as true horror.

I don't know why people are bashing you. You made some very valid points, and the scares are gone in this game. I was almost hoping the Ada segment, or ONE of them would have that old school look to it. Just to mix it up so it MIGHT be scary with the bad camera angles and limited resources.

reply

I see your point captain_wesker.

The only way for this series to return to true survival horror would be new characters in new places. Then everyone would get survival horror but hate the new characters. There's almost no winning. Would be nice to see someone new experiencing this ALONE for the first time... perhaps meeting older characters somewhere along the way...

But no matter what... people will complain.

The way I see things... we're indulging in someone ELSES world... I'm just experiencing it.

I'm sure new characters wouldn't necessarily be automatically hated on a wide scale.

Speaking of characters: too bad Capcom hasn't brought back Billy.

I could accept change if the change was for the better. But much like the "change" that Obama gave America, the change that Capcom gave to Resident Evil was for the worse.

Resident Evil 4 is the best, IMO. The PS1 Resident Evil's were good in premise/story but those tank controls and god-awful 'cinematic' camera set ups were a huge annoyance. Even though I adapted to them.

Now as for RE5, Umbrella Chronicles, Operation Raccoon City, in my opinion *beep* that.

Revelations, one of the best games in the series, just came out this year and has a lot of elements that made the older games great while also adding some of the best aspects of the newer games. It's a bit dramatic to act like the series is dead, it's definitely not, the problem is Crapcom just doesn't know how to focus on one thing and is trying to make the series too many things for too many different groups of gamers.

reply

Part of that is due to wanting the Call of Duty demographic to buy their games.

As for being dramatic...I don't think so. Mutants on motorcycles pretty much sealed the deal.

reply

This is true, but I've tried to get freinds of COD to play RE, and they won't. They don't like the linear style or pacing, even though COD is quite linear. Just two different worlds and you can not get someone to buy something that they don't think is up their alley. I like RE and the COD games, but for different reasons. The thing that's wrong with RE is it HAS shifted to action. I haven't been scared since Code Veronica.

reply

The cinematic camera angles were not an annoyance, they were what gave the game it's atmosphere and were part of what made them so suspenseful. Ditching that in 4 is exactly what made that game not scary. You just wind up fighting a lot of enemies and if you're a good enough player you can see where they're coming from at all times. There is no atmosphere to the new games, they're just 3rd person shooters, but instead of normal enemies they're infected with some kind of plague.

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.

reply

It really is a shame that a growing majority of Resident Evil players found out about the series through 4 without having played any of the games beforehand.

They think Resident Evil is just another boring action shooter, when originally, it's really not. It's the franchise that coined the original term 'survival horror', and brought more to the player than the same, played-out, boring 'stock up 1,000 bullets for the 10 guns I'm carrying, and then blast through 50 enemies at once!'.

I have to agree with the OP. I played the online demo and hated it so much I didnt even buy the game. It felt like a Call of Duty game to me, and I hate crap like that. I had been counting down to this release for a year and even bought an XBOX just to play it (after not having a system for 18 months). Playing RE4 for the first time was an amazing experience, but it's time to admit the makers of the series simply do not value what I (and others) loved about that game.

The greatest emotional response I had to playing RE4 were during the moments when I would pause the game, count my bullets and grenades, compare them to the number of enemies I had to advance and then developed a plan to get through them. Even in that first major seen in the village, when you have to defeat about 20 Ganados and a chainsaw guy, you have to learn the village and the location of weapons and then implement a strategy to complete it.

And then when you are trying to play through on Pro level, you know how to plan ahead. "Dang, I gotta go back and do that again, because I have to have enough ammo to beat that giant".

That survival element was less applicable to RE5 and seems nonexistant to this new, chaotic game where it's full speed ahead from the start, with no attention paid to strategy. This new style simply does not have the personality and charm of RE4 (and the RE1 remake).

I look at my red hands and my mean face, and I wonder about that man that's gone so wrong

reply

Lots of fluff and flash, but little substance. I don't see this game having the staying power/memorability of other core Resident Evil titles.

Yeah, it's a shame how terrible this series has become. I wish that Capcom would either just move on or reboot the series. There's nothing scary about these games anymore. Dead Space is currently the best horror game series on the market. Hell, the Alan Wake games are better than the current Resident Evil games.

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.

reply

Rachel's boss from RE Revelations isn't scary ? and Capcom already stated horror games DOESN'T sell very well.that's why they focused on Action elements.
but that doesn't mean the future games won't be survival horror. AGAIN, look at RE Revelations.

I'm quite enjoying Resident Evil 6 (though Leon & Ada's campaigns I think are a lot better than Chris's so far), and I think there are plenty of creepy atmospheric moments, shocks and survival horror elements for it to be a worthy addition to the franchise.

However, I would definitely prefer it if the series did recede back to the exploration roots that the original three games had. It was purely the sense of adventure and wonder that it gave; inside a huge mansion, a police station/sewers, streets of a city... and also the puzzles could be short term or long term, like how you could come across an obstacle where an object or two you find later in the game will solve it. And like somebody else says, the villains could attack at any given moment, which was tense for the zombies, scary as hell for the lickers, and the Nememis...... woah, just woahhhh!!!!

I'm not calling for everything to go back to the way it was, e.g. the still screens. I'm sure that works very well in horror films and it did for RE1-3, but I think they were right in moving on from that for later generation consoles.
