An Arrow Episode With NO FLASHBACKS!

Episode 6.4: mediocre, childish, preposterous and, as ever, by-the-numbers, but also narratively coherent because it was the first Arrow episode I've seen with NO FLASHBACKS, which annoy the daylights out of me. Have the alleged writers kicked the flashback habit? Here's hopin'.

reply

I hope they cut on those annoying flashbacks as well, like you said this episode while generic had much better flow because it was a continuous story.

reply

The previous season was supposed to be the last one that would use flashback plots.

reply

If only that were true. Flashbacks in tonight's ep, and flashbacks in the first 3 eps of this season. That's why THIS ep was so refreshing.

reply

this one was full of Slade flashbacks but at least it had a point (his relationship with his son)

reply

Like what the below article says, the flashbacks were supposed to be reminiscent of the Kung Fu series.

To me it also felt like they were trying to ape the non-linear structure of "Batman Begins," but in a simpler way for television audiences.
But I did get tired of how the flashbacks to Lian Yu kept heaping on more and more improbable stuff to the storyline.

reply

It was like Lost, basically.

reply

I quit Lost halfway through the first season just because of that.

reply

All that matters is that the flashbacks distracted from the narrative. What they “were supposed to be” does not matter. What they were in fact does matter.

reply

Plus they kept adding more and more ridiculous stuff to Oliver's time on Lian Yu.
