What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.
I think he's a little too quick witted and in your face for some stuffy slow people. Also, a lot of people don't like New Yorkers or gays or bad manners so it makes sense he'd have more hate. The fans he does have aren't going anywhere though, he'll be OK, he's got a solid fanbase.
