Accent

My family and I have lived in New Jersey for a very long time. How is it that no one on this show noticed that she's talking in a New York accent and not at New Jersey one? Her accent is more Brooklyn. It's to the point that my mom now refuses to watch the show based on this fact.

totally agree! i'm from new jersey as well and no one i know talks like that.

I don't live live in New Jersey. Or NY. Or America.
But yes, even I noticed that her accent was very 90s Brooklyn. I thought to myself, "lol what?" :D

reply

Not an American but the accent is very annoying and I won't be watching again.

reply

Depends what part of Jersey you're from. Italians and Jews from North Jersey, people from the sticks in NW Jersey, Philly Jersey. All have different accents.

Seems like she watched Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny and called it a day. People who try to do Italian North Jersey or NYC accents often come off sounding more Boston than anything. With all the actors from Jersey, they couldn't get someone who could do an authentic accent? That being it said, it's not the worst I've ever heard (or "hoid", as the case may be).

I actually like the accent Janet Montgomery uses in her role as Martina Garretti even though it probably isn't too authentic. She did her research by watching movies and TV shows with people from Jersey...funny thing is she's from London and speaks with a British accent in real life.

reply

Because she's British and except for a very few, very talented actors, none can pull off an "American" accept that isn't something "over the top" like a Southern Drawl/New York, etc.

Only person I can think of that can pull off a "clear" American accent is Hugh Laurie, in House.

Look at other Brits playing Americans; nearly all using the equivalent of an American doing a "Cockney".

To me she is doing a Rosie Perez impersonation.

"I Aim at the Stars,But sometimes I hit London!" (Dr.Werner Von Braun)

Did she also refuse to watch the Sopranos with all of those Brooklyn accents going on?
