They Need New Script Writers

Dave seems to be the leader in this, but how many times do we have to hear we'll do whatever it takes to win. Of course we know that, or what else would they fish the week on their boats for their paltry salary.

I would be most interested to know what National Geographic pays these guys, and if it's the same for all captains. A season or two ago Marciano was paying about a grand for bait, ice, and fuel per trip, if that's norm and they're going out as often as they do I can't see these guys depending on this exclusively - does Nat Geo pay that much?

I read somewhere that Dave is also a pilot - somehow I got the idea he was a commercial pilot of cargo planes.

What they need to do is throw WICKED TUNA, and all the other cheaply produced, scripted, staged, faked pos garbage "Reality" shows on the channel, off NatGeo.. these garbage shows cheapen the channel.

As far as pay, whatever NatGeo pays these bums is too much... the slime should pay NatGeo to air the garbage....

If you deflect the topic of the thread from the show to me, our discussion is over

Last week was the first time I've watched the show. I saw two episodes, and it seems really redundant.

The main plot seems to be the antagonism between the tuna.com owner and the long haired independent dude. Listening to them yell insults at each other wears out pretty quickly. It's the typical "reality" show script.

It would be cool if they discussed what they do the rest of the year when the tuna are out of season. Maybe if they showed some interactions with their families would help. Catching two tuna a week or less for a short season doesn't add up to much money when you subtract operating expenses, crew pay, and taxes.

I guess in this day and age we are stuck with endless reality shows. Even the freaking Weather Channel has them now.

I agree the scripts could do with sorting as well as some of the editing, that can get clumsy.

Most of the guys like Dave Marciano off the Hard Merch do cod & haddock charters as well & in the off season he also skippers other boats at times. On a forum Dave goes on, he says Tuna fishing accounts for only a 1/4 of his yearly income, since the season is only about 4 months.

Dave off the FV Tuna.com as you mention is also a pilot & Captain at JetBlue and splits his time between the two.

Pin Wheel I think does the same with charters and also has his own website selling t shirts caps etc and like other Captains he probably does other fishing through the year.

Apparently the Captains didn't get much for doing the show in the first season, just about covered their cost but from the 2nd season on they got a pay bump, not going to make them millionaires but most commercial fishermen would do it given half the chance. Also they get sponsors from all the reels & custom rods, electronics & sunglasses etc manufacturers that they get given & use on the boats, you see stickers all over their boats that get camera time.

As for the person that posted below you, calling hard working fishermen who got a lucky break by Nat Geo for making this program, bums & Slime speaks volumes about you tbh. But hey, crack on if it makes you feel better. From reading your previous posts, you obviously have a massive chip on your shoulder about nat geo & history channel etc doing 'reality' shows.

I wholeheartedly agree with that post, NatGeo has gone down the tubes, this is not quality programming, it's pure trash, and as for the "characters" on this show, they are lower than scum. The producers obviously must beg them to act like idiots in some lame effort to create more "action". Action is all that seems to sell on television anymore and the United States of Idiots eats it up like the *beep* eating morons that they are.

I spend a great deal of time fishing, not commercially but for relaxation and to enjoy the outdoors. If someone who acted like these crew members showed up he wouldn't last long. The fast rivers are very dangerous and people drown there all the time, some by accident, some not.
